Member Posted October 9, 2009 #1 Share Posted October 9, 2009 Seabourn is joining MSC & Fred Olsen on this until further notice. If Costa stays its course, it'll be a niche market to the more adventurous few. Hope that region is secured again, and soon.
bahrain_not_dubai! Posted October 10, 2009 #2 Share Posted October 10, 2009 I interviewed Captain Peitro Sinisi back in Feb, when he was master of the Classica on a seires of Gulf cruises, and he said that a naval ship is never more than 15 minutes away during the Gulf of Aden passing, so I do not think passengers in the Gulf of Aden, on Costa atleast, have much to worry about. Also, as these cruises are not very frequent I do not understand why cruise lines cannot have an escort for the few hours in which they pass this 'hot' area. I doubt these naval vessels could be doing something more important in these few hours.

"A naval ship is never more than 15 minutes away", say if the warships can travel at 30 knots, then that is 7.5 sea miles, so that means the warships are positioned every 15 sea miles. I doubt it. The warships are not only covering the Gulf of Aden but and exclusion zone around the coast of Somalia to the tune of over 2 million sqaure kilometers. Pirates very rarely attack cruise ships but go for the slower cargo ships and tankers, what more important than saving the crews of such vessels.
