Tahitian Princess-A Smoker's Paradise???Help!

Okay..I am a bit panicked..I just booked my first cruise ever..on the Tahitian Princess for September..but just read some reviews that there are alot of smokers on this ship..and that even though the TP has a few designated spots..they didn't enforce these rules and the smokers were even lighting up cigars in the pool at night! I am also wondering how stinky the rooms will be if they allow smoking in the cabins.

I am totally spoiled living in California with strict 'no smoking' laws in most public places, so we are rarely subjected to the stench of cigs..and noone I know smokes..but this could be a big negative for us if we have a stinky cabin and lots of smokers.

I know this will depend on who is cruising and I knowI can expect more smokers in other parts of the world..but in tight quarters..blechh.

Can anyone fill me in on how it is..do we need to bring some febreeze and air freshners for the cabin??

I am getting sick just thinking about this possibility...

We were on the Tahitian Princess twice and we never really had a problem with smokers. We don't smoke either. The last time was just this Thanksgiving and most people kept their smoking in the specially designated areas. Only once in the 10 days did I get a whiff of smoke because I was in the wrong area. Please go and enjoy yourselves. Smoking isn't allowed on the tenders which are used in most ports or on the tour busses. They don't allow it on the plane either. Smokers aren't in the dining room or the show lounge or most other public rooms. The main place on the TP is the casino and bar, a small area by the pool and out on deck.

Thanks for the reply. I guess it was just one particular cruise that the reviewer went on that had obnoxious smokers who flouted the rules and smoked wherever they liked including IN THE POOL! Blech! I doubt I will be in the pool...but I just can't stand the smell of stale cigarettes or fresh cig smoke...

We will see how it goes..hopefully a bunch of healthy non-smokers will be on this particular sailing..with a smaller ship..less chance of too many being on board.

We are also from Calif. (The OC) and had shared your concern. We had NO problems with smoke/smokers except for the small and often crowded casino. Many other cruisers were from Calif. and didn't smoke, so it all turned out well. I wouldn't worry about the smoke issue. It really wasn't an issue at all. This is an excellent cruise, you're going to have a great time. ;) We had such a blast that we're going back again in May.

Maygoddess, I've never sailed on the TP but have been on other Princess ships. I've never found smoke to be a real problem (even in our staterooms). As others have pointed out, the exceptions are the casino and certain areas of a few bars. Smoking in the pool ??? I can't even imagine and I've never seen it happen. I say, don't worry too much about it. I think you'll be fine. Enjoy your cruise! :)

I haven't seen smoking in the pool on a cruise, but there were alot of folks (mostly American BTW) smoking in the pools at the MGM Grand in Vegas and at the Westin in Vegas. Drinking too!! It was so weird to have this guy tell me to move over because my sons splashing was getting his cigarette wet!!

So where did they flick their ashes? Blech!

Now I totally expect the casinos to be smoking area..given all these vices go hand in hand...now that I think of it..the ONLY time we are exposed to cigarette smoke is when we go up to Tahoe and hit the casinos. We put up with it for that short time..but I don't pay thousands of dollars to go up there either!!

Sounds like the two reviews I read were isolated cruise incident where they had cigar smokers who like to smoke in the pool..and smoked wherever they wanted..included non smoking areas..

I feel better about this now!

Patty, I'm glad you're feeling better about this. Really, I think you'll be fine. You already know that casinos are "hotbeds" of smoking (no real pun intended, but if there's a pun there, OK :p ) so avoiding the casino seems to be your best choice. DH and I do like casinos once in awhile (we live in an area with riverboat gambling) but the boats around here have non-smoking floors. :)

I'm still shaking my head about smoking in the pool! Hopefully, those 2 reviews you read were isolated incidents - with some really drunk and idiotic people. Seriously, I've never seen this on a cruise. Now as to where they put their ashes...???? Oh my!!!!!
