cougfan Posted February 7, 2010 #52 Share Posted February 7, 2010 I just want to say that I have really enjoyed all of your little movies. It is really getting me into the mood for my trip in November. How did you keep your cameras dry while on shore? I am trying to decide how best to keep my cameras safe from the weather while on shore. Did you have water proof backpacks? If you did, was it easy to get your camera stuff out while on shore? About layers of clothes - how many layers did you have on while on shore? Thank you for your answers. Julie
dileep Posted February 7, 2010 Author #53 Share Posted February 7, 2010 How did you keep your cameras dry while on shore? I am trying to decide how best to keep my cameras safe from the weather while on shore. Did you have water proof backpacks? If you did, was it easy to get your camera stuff out while on shore? About layers of clothes - how many layers did you have on while on shore? I cut up a plastic bag and stuck my camera in it. The hood helped at times, but often the rain or snow was coming in sideways. I tried to wipe off my lens often, but you can see that some pictures and videos have wet spots on the lens. The ship gave us water resistant back packs and I put my cameras in dry sacks just in case. We typically removed our cameras (I had still and video cameras) after we were ashore. Wish I had wiped off the lens more often! we used 2 layers for socks, pants, and topics with the topic layer being fleece. Our ship provided parkas were great too! The toughest time for keeping the cameras dry was during zodiac expeditions! Enjoy your trip. I see that you will be on National Geographic Explorer. Jade13 Posted July 26, 2010 #58 Share Posted July 26, 2010 Today, I heard from someone who was on the Jan 20 Antarctica cruise : The ship developed engine problems and we crawled back to Ushuaia. Almost everyone missed their flights and connections. The ship is still not fixed. The German passengers (300 or more) have been onboard for a couple of days, but aren´t going anywhere at the moment. They have been taking them out on tours, but have now run out of things to do in Ushuaia. Oh My, I wonder what happened to Minerva?

m1n1 Posted August 8, 2010 #60 Share Posted August 8, 2010 Just wanted to say Thanks for posting all of this Dileep. It brought back so many memories. You see, I used to be Executive Sous Chef on the MV Minerva back in 1995/96 when it was her maden voyage. Back in the day when all cabins were full and the cuisine was NO holds bared. I have many fond memories of that ship, it is graved into my memory and she has not changed one bit! OH, the stories I can tell you!:D Many thanks! Kirk.
