Tipping-rome cabs-civitevecchia to rome, rome to fco

I tipped an extra 15% on my transfer from the ship to FCO, and they were quite happy. I had excellent service and they waited 45 minutes in the rain for us to get off the ship. I think 10 to 15% would be about right.

I think you have to go with what makes you comfortable. Many Italians wouldn't tip at all (or would tip minimally), but drivers used to American clients have come to expect American tipping from them.

Actually, in many cases these are independent contractors driving their own cars, a situation that doesn't require a tip at all, but everyone has to do what they feel comfortable with.

Many times the drivers are "independent" and use their own vehicles. But they have to share a large portion of their fare with the main referring company. Most do expect some sort of tip. For me, if they are on time, drive safely, have a clean vehicle, and get me where I want to go on time, I give a tip.
