What to do in Lisbon, on a Monday?

Recommended Posts

Hi. We are taking a round trip Lisbon cruise in November of this year. The ship leaves Lisbon on a Monday night and we are flying into Lisbon the day before and spending a night in a hotel inside the castle walls.

So we have some time to do some sightseeing before we board the ship, but that day turns out to be a Monday. I see that most of the museums are closed on Mondays. Does anybody have any experience in visiting Lisbon and have any suggestions on what to do on a Monday. We are also spending a night in Lisbon after the ship returns there on early Wednesday morning, so our plan is to do most of the museums that day.

Thanks.

Hi Psoque,

No problem the museums being closed on Mondays.

Lisbon is a beautiful city, with lots to see. Don't limit your visit to the centre of town, though. Venture to Belém, Cascais, Sintra..... you'll love it.

We were there just this month on a Mon. in great weather. We took trolley 28 I think it was, which goes all over and just got on and off a few times with our guidebook to see lovely views or walk a bit. Too bad all the museums are closed that day, but the trolley ride is well worth it. You get a real feel for the older part of the city. Enjoy!

I very much like Lisbon but have never been impressed with the museums or the palaces. As mentioned:

go to Sintra... LOVELY place

eat pastries at Belem and wander a bit

Sintra palace and the Belem monastery are probably closed on Monday as well.

Take the little tram up the hill, enjoy some shopping (clothing and leather is cheap and good quality), enjoy the Portugese food, maybe go to a Fado concert.

I agree that Belem is a wonderful spot. But the pastries are only a small piece of it......the coach museum is fascinating, the monastery is astounding, the marine museum is well worth a visit and the park by the navigator's monument is a lovely place to enjoy those pastries!!

We found the Gulbenkian Art Museum to be one of the finest collections-check it out on the web; it is a beautiful space and he had great taste to go with the fortune. The Lisbon Museum of Ancient art has exquisite items as well. You can pick out just a few items and it will make your visit worthwhile. The museum brochure lists their highlights.

Thank you all for your suggestions so far. Yes, we were planning to take the self guided tour of the city on Monday. Does anyone know if anything (other than stores) is open in Lisbon on Mondays? We like museums and such, and luckily we have another day (the day the ship returns to Lisbon) to visit some of them, but we would like to make the best of the Monday as well.
