I like Venere.com for hotels and tripadvisor.com for reviews.

And this website has so much information in general.

We did 3 days/2 nights post-cruise and stayed at Ca' Doge right in Piazzale Roma, but it was a littler more than 150 EUROs per night.

There was another hotel on the other side of the Piazzale called

the Hotel Santa Chiara (right on the Grand Canal), not sure what

they are currently charging.

Have fun planning, then taking your trip!

Going in October 2010. Do not want to spend more than 150 Euros per night. Any suggestions??? Good location, clean room in a safe area is what matters most to us.

We stayed here a few years back:

It's very close to Piazza San Marco...and very close to the Valleresso Vaparetti station...on a nice quiet interior courtyard...very convenient...

The hotel is a nice little 17 room boutique hotel...

...and, I am pretty sure you can get it within your 150 euro per night budget...I just checked the website myself and punched in the nights of October 24 and 25...and a double economy room starts at 127.50 EUR...

Good luck...

We stayed 2 nights at the La Locondiera http://www.lalocandiera-ve.com/ last Sept. We were very pleased. Great location on a small piazza 5 min walk from P. San Marco Vaporetto stop. No bridges to cross if you are pulling luggage. Very clean, large room and bath. Excellent buffet breakfast included. Very helpfull staff. 150 euros. We walked all over Venice night and day. Not sure that there are any areas that are not safe.

If you haven't already found a hotel, try signing into tripadvisor.com. You then do a search on the area and date you are looking for. It will come back with multiple sites you can check rates on. I booked thru Venere.com and am quite happy with the hotel and the rate.

We have used www.venere.com many times for finding hotels in Italy. Have not been disappointed.
