Soldiers around port and patrolling the beach

Our ship stopped by Costa Maya about two weeks ago. The port area is enclosed, it seems quite new and safe, many stores around, and also a Hard Rock Café. We saw couple of (military) soldiers patrolling the port area. When we were on Mahajual beach, again, there were 8-10 soldiers nearby carrying automatic weapons, it was odd to see those weapons around the tourist area. Hopefully it's still safe there.

There is a small Mexican Naval Base by the lighthouse. They do patrol on land, but generally around the base itself. Often soldiers are used as guards for large public facilities. You'll see this all over Central and South America and sometimes on Caribbean islands. Nothing to be alarmed about.

Was the Hard Rock Cafe in the town open? They've been threatening to open it soon for over a year.
