FLying into Anchorage a day early and staying at the Captain Cook hotel and then taking a SB Princess cruise to Skagaway, Juneau and Keitchican (sp?). Can anyone recommend a good place to buy canned smoked salmon to send home? We will have the most time in Anchorage, Skagaway and Juneau. And we won't have a car. Thanks for your help!

Before you spend money to buy and ship home, check your local grocery stores of Alaska canned salmon. I've been buying some at COSTCO which is really good and some at a Safeway owned store that is above average.

Check also places like Amazon.com that offer free shipping.

Hi! When we were in Alaska we just love the salmon we ate on the Discovery Riverboat in Fairbanks. We bought 9 cans at the gift shop but that didn't last long back here in Ohio. We tried to buy good canned salmon locally, but no luck, so we called Fairbanks and they shipped us a case. The shipping was only about $12 plus the cost of the salmon. Their website is www.riverboatdiscovery.com. The people who run the riverboat own the cannery. When you stay at the Captain Cook go to the Whale Tail , a restaurant/bar in the hotel- their oysters rockefeller are amazing! We were there for the 1st and last day of the land portion of our cruisetour. It was the best thing we ate on the whole trip and we had great salmon cooked over a wood fire and delicious halibut, but the oysters are something we still talk about!;)

While either my son or myself smoke our own salmon, I have purchased smoked salmon for gifts the last couple of years at Simply Salmon on Creek St, in Ketchikan ... I believe that they also operate a kiosk in the downtown area as well. I have found their prices very good and their quality excellent.

I looked up riverboatdiscovery.com. looks like a good fall back in case we can't find what we want! We have lots of canned salmon here, but not smoked canned salmon. And, thanks for the restaurant tip. Living along the Texas coast DH and I love seafood, and can't wait to get to Alaska to try theirs!

In Ketchikan, you can find canned smoked salmon at many places and most (if not all) of them will arrange shipping.

Some of my favorites are:

Good God Seafood - http://www.goodgodlobster.com/ They sell Silver Lining, which is the local cannery in town.

Salmon, Etc. - http://www.salmonetc.com 907-247-7256 They also have Silver Lining canned salmon for purchase.

Chinook & Company - http://www.chinookandcompany.com 907-225-4438 Their offerings are from Copper River, known for top quality salmon.

Ketchikan Fish Market - http://www.ketchikanfishmarket.com 888-247-3744

There are also several seasonal companies who are excellent as well.

Enjoy!
