Best Route from Somerset to Port

Staying overnight in Somerset at Crowne Plaza (won on Priceline). Driving to port next day around 9:30 - 10:00 am on a Saturday morning and will be parking at the port. Mapquest indicates drive will be 35 miles and 45 minute drive either taking I-287 to I-95 or I-287 to 440 through Stanten Island. I'm not familiar at all with driving in Newark area - which would be the easier drive with the lesser amount of traffic? Thanks for any help.

You'll probably encounter less traffic going through Staten Island because you avoid the NJ Turnpike and also approach the cruise port from the less congested direction on 440. However, it will cost slightly more going that way as the toll for the Outerbridge Crossing entering Staten Island is more than the NJ Turnpike toll you'll be avoiding by taking that route.
