kyriecat Posted March 23, 2005 #5 Share Posted March 23, 2005 I think "naturalist" here is meant to be a nature specialist who can identify and discuss the local plants and animals during the cruise. I'm hoping the OP isn't referring to the other definition of naturalist (nudist), but you never know. I grew up in East Texas. There was a nudist colony that took up residence in the Big Thicket area when I was in high school. They called themselves "naturalists" because they were communing with nature. For a long time I thought naturalists were the same thing as naked people. When my husband and I took a boat tour of the Everglades several years later, the captain announced that this tour would have a naturalist on board. I thought the woman was going to take her clothes off  so I wasn't sure that I wanted on that tour. After she started talking about the area, I realized that there was another form of naturalist.
Schplinky Posted March 23, 2005 #6 Share Posted March 23, 2005 Oh, I thought the person was meaning naturopath!
TrentS Posted March 23, 2005 #7 Share Posted March 23, 2005 You're mixing up the spelling here... Nudists are NATURISTS, not spelled the same as Naturalists.
Schplinky Posted March 23, 2005 #8 Share Posted March 23, 2005 Actually, if you google Naturalist and clothing optional, you come up with lots of nudist sites. The nudies seem to use both.
TrentS Posted March 23, 2005 #9 Share Posted March 23, 2005 Well Google NATURALIST and you get nothing about nudists. Remember, many people can't spell very well and if you add clothing optional to a slightly different word like naturalist, when you really mean naturist you're bound to get some sites. Some naturists may be naturalists as well, but naturist = nudist, naturalist = those who study or are versed in nature or natural history.
