we are thinking about taking the fast ferry to Haines (have been to Skagway before) but don't know if there's anything in town worth seeing, for parents with school age children.

The answer probably depends, at least partly, on answers to these questions:

 

1) what interests you?

 

2) when are you going?

 

3) exact ages of the kids. "school aged" children can be 5-19. Huge difference in interests and attention span.

Last year, we booked the Takshanuk Trail 4x4 tour - took the fast ferry from Skagway to Haines, were picked up at the dock and taken to Takshanuk Mountain, where we drove Kawasaki Mules (think golf carts on steroids) up the mountain. We stopped for a snack on the way up and lunch on the way down - lots of beautiful scenery. As far as I know, you can only book through your cruiseline.
