Advice on booking early or month from cruise

I have booked my last 3 cruises within 2 months or so of leaving off of Internet sights. Got great deals. But I do wonder if there's a benefit to booking a year or over 6 months ahead. And where do I book where I can get money back if prices drop? It'd be my responsibility to watch for drops in fare and call the agency? Thanks everyone!!!
