Doughboy Posted October 24, 2011 #1 Share Posted October 24, 2011 The last time we did a Western Caribbean the ship had port talks and they also sold coupon books for around $20.00. When we arrived, for example, at Ocho Rios, we were office free transportation into town to visit jewelry shops. You didn't have to buy anything, but it was a nice way to get into the town. Does anybody know if they still to this?
Doughboy Posted October 28, 2011 Author #2 Share Posted October 28, 2011 Has anybody been shopping in Falmouth and how safe is it?
cb at sea Posted October 28, 2011 #3 Share Posted October 28, 2011 Falmouth is a cruise ship port...designed and built for the cruise passengers. It's not yet totally completed. It's as safe as anywhere else.
mtsnd1900 Posted October 28, 2011 #4 Share Posted October 28, 2011 On our most recent cruise, Jamaica was great (Falmouth). We hired Peat Taylor tours and Peat took us into Mobay and other neighboring towns. He also took us to where the locals would shop (supermarket) and a locals restaurant in town. The port was a bunch of pre-built, junk stores. get out of the secured port area and go see the real Jamaica, it is actually nice (and fairly safe, especially with a guide.) You could even walk around outside the secured area with out much of a problem and see the local town - there were hundreds of people walking about and we felt totally fine. I had reservations about the town before, but now feel as though it could be a nice place in the near future (and actually is now). Not sure about any sale book from the cruise ship, but typically, if the ship recommends it, it is because they cruise line is paid by the company to do so - as all those recommended shopping places are. MPowder Posted October 29, 2011 #5 Share Posted October 29, 2011 I did not go to any port shopping talks in the ship, but from the cruiseline port map that was given to us, all of the cruise recommended shops are within the port secured area and they are all within walking distance. I don't think there is any free transportation by cruiseline like what you had before. You can walk out of the secured port area to see the real town. We only took trolley to tour around the town so not sure about the safety, but many people chose to walk around.
