imacruiselover2 Posted November 21, 2011 #1 Share Posted November 21, 2011 We would like to go on the cable car and then walk down the botanical gardens. Is that located in the city center? We would also like to see Te papa museum and cuba mall. What order should we do this in and are they all within walking distance from each other? kiwijohn Posted November 21, 2011 #2 Share Posted November 21, 2011 Suggest you take shuttle bus to the information centre and then walk to Te Papa. You could walk to along the waterfront from the ship but that would eat into your day. Walk along Tory St or Taranaki St to Courtenay Place and take a bus to the Cable Car stop in Lambton Quay, go up in the Cable Car to the top and walk through the Botanical Gardens where you could have lunch in the Rose Garden Cafe and exit in Glenmore St and continue along Bowen St to Parliament Buildings (you can do a tour if you like (free) then walk along Aitken St to St Pauls in Mulgrave St the original old wooden Cathedral built of kauri walk downhill and then have a drink in New Zealand's oldest pub the Thistle built in 1842 where feared Maori Chief te Rauparaha used to drink after beaching his waka (Maori Canoe) nearby then walk back to the ship. You will note I have left out Cuba Mall which I do not think has any merit. These are my suggestions as a local.

We took the bus into town, went up the cable car, walked down the botanical gardens, which were beautiful btw. then the kids wanted to go back to the ship, so they went back and DH and I walked over to Te Papa Te Papa was awesome, its free to get in and you will wish you had all day there. We then strolled back to the ship. There is plenty of time to grab lunch also if you want. Deidre.:)

If you take the route given by Barnsey1802 you would find Cuba Mall a short distance from Te Papa. You would also have time to see the Beehive (Parliament) as well. Australian family Posted November 21, 2011 #6 Share Posted November 21, 2011 We took the shuttle into town, which stopped outside http://www.kirkcaldies.co.nz/ dept store. A beautiful store and well worth having a look especially if you are in town before Christmas. We then hopped on the cable car, and walked through the botanical gardens and then ended up at the rose gardens and had morning tea at the cafe. A really beautiful spot. We then caught the shuttle back upto the top of the botanical gardens which was a very interesting drive as we went past a lot of beautiful homes. Then we caught the cable car back down. We then walked to the Te Papa Museum. A very enjoyable day.
Haoie Posted November 22, 2011 #7 Share Posted November 22, 2011 As a Wellingtonian, it heartens me to see that plenty of others like our national museum. Te Papa is a pretty cool place! Personally I'd give Cuba mall a big pass though.
