How do I impress upon cruise that an upgrade would be very important for my wife and I since we're going for the first, hopefully of many to come, cruises?

you and Hundreds of thousands of New cruisers every year ... How bout the many that cruise over and over ...dont they deserve a upgrade too .......

Up grades are illusive and not always desireable. For a first cruise you might want to pick your cabin rather go with a gaurantee booking.

Besides, most upgrades are within the same basic cabin class which means identical accomodations.

Call the recommendation dept & ask about an upgrade. You wont get it for free. not with this being your first cruise with them. Hey now a day it does not matter if its your 50 with NCL!
I purchased one from KK to a balcony bc for $250 per person~
