Ship WiFi -> Android Phone -> Skype

Does anyone have experience using the ships Wifi via their SmartPhone to skype? In theory, once the phone has Wifi access, should be able to skype to skype call for free... anyone tried this?

as I understand it Skype won't work onboard. wireless just lets you walk around the ship or areas with wireless but the Internet connection from ship up to sAtellite and down to ground based connection is slooooow.

The internet connection is sloooooow on the ship. Most likely you wont be able to use Skype. Even if you could use Skype, you're being charged for the internet by the minute (sometimes as much as $75 cents a minute).

 

When I sailed on the Dream a few months ago (which is supposed to have one of the fastest internet in the entire fleet), it was painfully slow. Just to connect and send ONE email took me about 20 minutes.

Yes.

 

It works but you are paying .75 per minute for wi-fi access unless you have a package in which case it is a little less. SKYPE works fine on board, especially late at night or real early in the morning.

 

BTW, the Internet is slow, but it is no where near as slow as people would have you believe, especially if you avoid uploading or downloading image files, or large test files. Regular text e-mail works fine.
