Local Snorkel Tours

Does anyone know of any companies that offer snorkel tours in St. Maarten. The excursions through the ship are not long enough and are to much money. Looking for a local snorkel tour.

Thanks

We did a snorkel trip to Creole Rock with Creole Rock water sports which we really enjoyed. Here is the website:

Karysa, thanks for the website, I would assume you have to get a cab from the ship to the beach club. What was the cost per person? How long was the tour and how was the beach?

Thanks

From the pier it is my understanding that it will cost $25 for 1-2 passengers each way and take roughly 35 minutes. We were staying at the Grand Case Beach Club on vacation when we did the snorkeL trip. They take up to 5 people at a time and run trips at 10, 12 and 2. The boat ride is 5 minutes each way out to creole rock and the snorkeling was apprximately 1 1/2 hrs. You have to swim the whole time so it was long enough. We went all around the rock.

The beach is called Petite Plage and it is very nice and they have padded lounge chairs and drink service right to your chair. We paid $35 but that was back in the summer of 2010. On this island IMHO the snorkeling site is as important as the operator so really put some thought in to where you snorkel here.

I contacted Creole Rock Watersports, here is their reply:

Thank you for contacting us. I hope you enjoy your time on St. Martin/St. Maarten.

We are located inside the Grand Case Beach Club in Grand Case (French side) about 25 minutes away from the cruise ship dock in Philipsburg. Taxis are easily accessible at the dock. Expect to pay about $10-12 pp one way. The same driver that brings you to the resort usually takes you back to the dock , just check with the driver

We offer three daily snorkel trips to Creole Rock which lies less than 3 minutes from our dock. Creole Rock is a marine reserve on the French side of the island. The cost is $40pp which includes snorkel gear, use of eco-friendly sunscreen, a beverage on the boat and you are accompanied by a dive guide at all times. The trips leave at 10am, 12pm and 2pm and last about 2 hours. We take 6 people max so reservations are required. If you are interested I can send you the reservation form, we do require a 20% deposit. If you are coming by cruise ship*, the 10am trip works well for the time schedule.

You can either spend the rest of the afternoon on Petite Plage where you can rent chairs ($9/chair) and umbrellas ($2/umbrella), there is a restaurant onsite, as well as restrooms. You can also walk into town, Grand Case, and browse the boutiques and grab lunch at one of the local bbq stands known as Lolos.

]I hope this information helps. Please let me know if you have any questions or would like to book your snorkel trip to Creole Rock.[/font

Best regards

Monica

*If traveling by cruise ship: please note that Saint Martin lies in the Atlantic Time one hour ahead and “cruise ship" during the months of November to March. We operate on local, so please plan accordingly or you will miss the boat - we need to keep to schedule so we cannot wait too long. We recommend you check with your cruise ship as to what time the ship is on and what the island is on - usually 1 hour ahead.

To add to the above information about Creole Rock Watersports, they do not discount children's fares as most other snorkel companies do. Not a complaint, but for family's with lots of kids, it could be an issue. They also do not offer refunds of the 20% deposit for any reason other than your ship does not make port so make sure your plans are firm and that you are aware of the time difference.

We are booked with them for 2/14 off NCL Epic. Will return to let all know how it goes.

Do they still only take a total of 3 trips a day with a maximum of 5 people per trip?

Do you have a favorite place to snorkel?

OK, Monica @ Creole Rock Watersports just e-mailed me back to appologize that she had given me wrong information. They do discount children 12 and under to $25 and adults are $40. Am quoting myself to make sure everybody sees this correction.

She didn't mention the cancel policy she gave me as also being wrong, but the reservation form she sent states that there is a 24 hour cancellation policy which is not the same as what she told me above.

IMO you need to be a decent swimmer to be comfortable snorkelling out at Creole Rock. I found the current to be strong and one of the 30 something ladies on our trip got escorted back to the boat because she found it too difficult for her. This is definitely not the place to learn to snorkel and probably not suitable for many children under 10.
