Livorno- Pisa and Caves

We will be cruising in Aug on the Carnival Breeze- 2 adults and 2 DD's 8 & almost 10. We were thinking of renting a car (we have both driven in Europe before many times) and driving up to Pisa. After climbing the tower we wanted to do something different. Has anyone ever explored the caves in this area? Possibly the Grotta del Vento or Apuan Alps Natural Park? We though some nice cool caves would help beat the Aug heat!

I haven't been to the caves but I think it's a great idea, especially if you will have a city day in Rome either the day before or the day after.

Before driving into Pisa do familiarize yourself with the ZTL (restricted driving zone). It can be an expensive mistake to veer into one.
