sal13579 Posted May 17, 2004 #1 Share Posted May 17, 2004 what are chances of hurricane during September. Thinking of Dawn to bahamas out of New York, but am a little worried. Should I be. Thanks
Hobbsey Posted May 17, 2004 #2 Share Posted May 17, 2004 September is in the heart of hurricane season. There have been instances of cruises to Bermuda having to be rerouted to Canada because of weather. Generally, there is little worry regarding safety during hurricane season, you just have to be ready to miss ports and change itineraries. It can be espceilly hard on you if you pack for a tropical vacation and wind up cruising north to winter. 1968 Lurline (Matson) 1969 Mariposa (Matson) 1998 Seabreeze (Premier) 1998 Century (Celebrity) 1999 Seabreeze (Premier) 1999 Norwegian Crown (NCL) 1999 Voyager of the Seas (RCL) 2000 Westerdam (HAL) 2000 Carnival Victory (CCL) 2000 Sensation (CCL) 2001 Mercury (Celebrity) 2001 Norwegian Majesty (NCL) 2001 Vision of the Seas (RCL) 2002 Norwegian Wind (NCL) 2004 Maasdam (HAL)

jonsmom Posted May 17, 2004 #4 Share Posted May 17, 2004 I have had a couple of different experiences. One in September where we had to leave Bermuda one day early to outrun a hurricane and another experience in October where the ship was delayed nearly 14 hours due to hurricane conditions. In my opinion, I would never again want to anticpate a wonderful cruise vacation, which may be inexpensive because it is hurrican season, and then have it be ruined and be dissapointed. Or to spend valuable time delayed in an airport, trying to catch up with the ship because you just couldn't get out in time. Just like the previous poster mentioned, some cruises are rerouted to Canada/New England. Not my idea of the tropics, thank you. No use of the pool, cooler temps. Spend the extra $$ go in another season and not worry about it. Again,,my two cents. ladymanor1 Posted May 17, 2004 #5 Share Posted May 17, 2004 We sailed on the Dawn from NY at the end of last Sept. and lucked out with beautiful weather!! I think it was the cruise 2 weeks before us that was sent to Canada instead of the Fla/Bahama run due to a big hurricane. I think that hurricane season generally is from June until Nov. We choose to cruise in Sept despite the risk of bad weather for a various number of reasons and are booked on the Dawn again in Sept of this year. First and foremost being that the prices are generally lower this time of year, Secondly most of the children are back in school, and Thirdly, the weather (barring any hurricanes of course) is usually 80 and 90 degrees. So if you don't want to take the chance and would be very unhappy with a change in ports (from warm weather to cooler weather) then anytime from the end of Aug. to Sept and Oct would not be for you. The thing is...you never know what you are gonna get during this time of year and you need to be aware of that, and willing to roll with the punches before you make your decison . KapohoTwo Posted May 18, 2004 #6 Share Posted May 18, 2004 Like a previous poster said..hurricane season is June-Nov. That is 6 months or 1/2 of the year. Personally, I would rather be on a cruise vacation during hurricane season. If there is a chance of a hurricane hitting near a scheduled port, the captain can steer the ship away from the bad weather. However, on a land-based vacation, you are "stuck"...the hotel windows will be boarded up, the pool furniture will be removed, and in the worst case scenario, if the hurricane "hits"..most likely power will be lost, there will be flooding, etc. Flight schedules will be a nightmare. We have cruised AND missed ports during the non-hurricane season, due to bad weather, and other unforseen emergencies. I do agree that heading to Canada after packing for the Caribbean is a huge disappointment, but at least the whole vacation is not ruined. Most hurricanes typically occur during Aug, Sept, and Oct., but we still choose to cruise during those months...prices are great...and it is all just a BIG gamble!! richtersl Posted May 18, 2004 #7 Share Posted May 18, 2004 I've lived in NJ/PA all my life and remember getting hit with hurricanes during the month of September. Do they happen on a regular basis? No. But the odds are always there... Cruise ships go out of their way to avoid hurricanes. Should one ever be a threat to the Dawn, NCL will probably have her do a northern itinerary. If, during the week of your cruise, a hurricane is scheduled to hit the Carolinas, you'll have time to pack some cooler weather items. I would just monitor The Weather Channel the week before your departure. gardencat Posted May 18, 2004 #8 Share Posted May 18, 2004 Hey I'm beginning to feel insulted here! Canada can be lovely in September. Fall colours, sometimes crisp but sunny days my favorite season actually. Of course it can also be cold, grey, wet and miserable so pack some warm clothes and rain gear. Oh the unexpected adventure of travel! Isn't that half the fun? djmpj Posted May 18, 2004 #9 Share Posted May 18, 2004 http://www.cnn.com/2004/WEATHER/05/17/hurricane.forecast/index.html Cnn has an article this morning saying that we should expect an above-normal hurricane season this year. The National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration is forecasting for 12 to 15 tropical storms to form during the season, which runs from June 1 to November 30. Six to eight storms are predicted to become hurricanes with two to four storms developing into major hurricanes ranked as Category 3 or higher on the Saffir-Simpson scale of hurricane strength. Should we be worried? I am booked for 10/31 out of NY. If there is a hurrican brewing down south, how does NCL handle that? Hobbsey Posted May 18, 2004 #10 Share Posted May 18, 2004 While it is true that being on board is better than being on land if a strom is near the ship has a much better alternative for cruising away in the Caribbean than they do along the Atlantic coast. For cruises orginating in NYC that has a storm between the ship and the destination the only recourse is to go the other way, Canada. Now, if the storm is in the southern part of the Caribbean or already up near the Yucatan then the ship may proceed south. But if the storm is tracking into the Atlantic then you'll enjoy the shopping values offerred in Hallifax. 1968 Lurline (Matson) 1969 Mariposa (Matson) 1998 Seabreeze (Premier) 1998 Century (Celebrity) 1999 Seabreeze (Premier) 1999 Norwegian Crown (NCL) 1999 Voyager of the Seas (RCL) 2000 Westerdam (HAL) 2000 Carnival Victory (CCL) 2000 Sensation (CCL) 2001 Mercury (Celebrity) 2001 Norwegian Majesty (NCL) 2001 Vision of the Seas (RCL) 2002 Norwegian Wind (NCL) 2004 Maasdam (HAL)
trish1c Posted May 18, 2004 #11 Share Posted May 18, 2004 We sailed the Bahamas last year as Hurricane Isabel was coming up the east coast. If she had hit the Bahamas as predicted, our ship would have detoured to Mexico. Sailing out of NY along the eastern seaboard, the only place the ship can go is out to sea (I think -- I'm sure others will correct me if I'm wrong). Given that the Carolinas are most often hit, an eastern seaboard cruise would be too risky for me during hurricane season. You may luck out & get perfect weather. I'll wish you well. DivaG Posted May 18, 2004 #12 Share Posted May 18, 2004 I too will keep my fingers crossed. We're cruisin' the Dawn 9/12 - 9/19 (our anniversary week). While we're excited to head towards the Bahamas, if we have to go to Canada due to bad weather conditions, so be it. We'll watch the weather once we get closer to September and see what's what. ladymanor1 Posted May 18, 2004 #13 Share Posted May 18, 2004 We will be leaving 2 weeks after you on the 26th of Sept. Weather is never a gaurenteed thing now matter what time you choose to travel. I personally choose Sept over April, May and early June, as there seems to be more rainy days in those months. But thats just my opinion Debbie DivaG has a great time and let me know how it goes....I will be keeping my fingers crossed and watching the weather
jmcdon7230 Posted May 18, 2004 #14 Share Posted May 18, 2004 A few years ago on the Majesty I learned that when the ship is returning to Miami on the last day of the cruise, the Captain will attempt to plow through a storm in order to unload the empty wallets and take on a fresh load. No reroutes or alternative ports were considered!
