Northern Residence Posted February 23, 2012 Author #26 Share Posted February 23, 2012 Thank you, everyone, for your valuable input. Sounds like the French Balcony is the way to go as it allows air and light without compromising the size of the cabin ( I was unaware the full balcony took space from the cabin). You've definitely helped the decision making process.

You've definitely helped the decision making process. On the ships of AMA that have double balconies, they do NOT take away from the size of the cabin. The cabins are larger by ~40 sq ft than the French Balcony cabins so the actual room size is not compromised. This is the case on the AmaCerto, the newest AMA shipped that we are booked on later this year.

supersecdd Posted February 24, 2012 #29 Share Posted February 24, 2012 what is a French balcony?
Rare franski Posted February 24, 2012 #30 Share Posted February 24, 2012 A French Balcony is a sliding glass door with a bar across the opening. You sit in your cabin, but have the opening for fresh air. This is a picture taken inside our cabin on the Amalyra... the cement wall is the wall of the lock (yes, the boat gets that close...) Rare franski Posted February 25, 2012 #33 Share Posted February 25, 2012 I actually love the locks... and do not get tired of going through them. And - have yet to take a river cruise where we have not travelled through them. But - if you are claustrophobic, you might want to leave the curtains closed while the only view is cement.
