Only carry-on luggage, will this problem with porters?

Had a bad encounter one time in Florida where I only had a backpack, and the guy took it off my back even after I insisted not to, then asked for a "tip".

 

If I go to the NY terminal with only carry-on luggage, will the porters there force my take my luggage again and ask for money?

Not with my experience at NY harbor. Some people were just walking right by the porters with their luggage and up to the boarding area. As long as it will fit through the security machine, you should be fine.
