Has anyone done the Royal Caribbean's COBA Mayan Ruins Tour this year yet?

Recommended Posts

Was just wondering if anyone has recently done the RC Coba Mayan Tour this year yet? We are looking at doing it in May on the Freedom of Seas. My questions are: 1. can you still climb the temple yet? (rumor has it that this will soon be closed to climbing) - don't want to spend 8 hours if you cannot climb. 2. Is the luncheon and Mayan show worth the extra travel time? or does this mean less time touring the ruins?

I know about the Tulum tour and will only do this if you cannot climb at Coba anymore. Tulum will defintely be our 2nd choice over Coba.

Thank you to anyone who might have an answer.:o

1. Did you like the lunch and Mayan show that went along with the tour? 2. How long did you actually have to tour at Coba?

3. RC website says the tour is a total of 8 hours - did it take that long?

Sorry for all the questions - but my family and I really want to be able to climb and see the ruins - not so much the Mayan show. Just wanted to make sure before I spend the money that it will be worth it.

Thank you for your initial response. Just wondering if you could add a little more.

Hi,

I climbed the large pyramid at Coba few months ago. 138 feet.

We had about 2 hours there. Enough time to climb Nohoch Mul

if you go straight there first. The other sites are spread out far and

it is not possible to see everything in a few hours.

I also like to climb and booked this tour on the Liberty. There were to Royal

ships in port and they easily filled a bus. I would have liked to have spent more

time at Coba but they bused us to Karens Restaurant in Playa del Carmen

for lunch.

I'll book Coba again and tour the rest on bicycle for the 2 hours.

It was a fun climb.

Just so you know, you can't climb anything at Tulum.

thanks for your reply. This helps. At the restaurant - do you get a select meal or do you order off the menu? What kind of food is it?

I think we will also go directly to the climb and then rent the bicycles to try and tour as much as possible.

Hi,

We were the first Royal group to do the Coba tour. The restaurant we were

supposed to eat lunch was not prepared for us...so we went

to Karen's on the guides suggestion.

You may go somewhere else, but they served grilled chicken

breast sandwiches and were good. Nachos and cheese and salad.

Ice cold Sol beer, optional. They had a terrific band. But you may not go there.

About the bikes. When your guide takes you to the entry building,

they ask if you want to rent a bike for yourself, $5, or the three wheeler

with driver, $10.

Just a heads up...they were out of bikes when we got there

due to large groups that arrived before we did.

We walked to Nohoch Mul, about a kilometer. After the climb

some bikes were available as other tours left the park.

Some three wheelers were waiting to take people back

to the entrance, $7.

Here's a shot I took at the bottom of the big one.

You know what they say?

"Going up is all physical".

"Going down is all mental".

Awesome picture - thanks! Thanks for the information too. The tour on the RC website lists a Mayan show as well to explain their reasoning for the world ending in December of 2012. Did they also do the show for you?

Hi,

No show for us. Not sure what that might be.

Our guide talked all the way on the bus ride, very interesting.

The December 21, 2012 is the end of their 'Long Count

Calendar". As any calendar does, it will just roll over and

start another long count. No worries. :)

BTW, if you ever visit Belize on Royal ship there's a few

nice Mayan climbs. I have done Xunantunich, Lamanai

and Cahal Pech so far. Next on my list is Altun Ha in Belize.

Costa Maya....Chacchoben Ruins tour offers mostly

stairway climbs but some nearly perfect pyramids to see.

Two of the best/most famous Yucatan ruins are Uxmal and Chichen Itza but

they are only available from Progreso on CCL. If you ever get to Uxmal,

you can climb a large one there, and explore in many Uxmal buildings,

and no vendors, :D. But C.I....no climbing no exploring and

too many vendors on site, :(.

Thanks again. You sound like me with all the information. I research historical sites and areas to the max! I'm not worried about Dec. 21, just really not interested in seeing the Mayan show, but it's part of the COBA tour for this year with RC. (I know where I'm going ;)) Anyways, thanks again. Some day hope to get to some other Mayan sites. My family is really looking forward to doing the climb at COBA and see as much of the site as possible. Will defintely check about the bikes when we get there too. Again, thanks!!!
