REVIEW - Voyager of the Seas - 3/31/11 to 4/6/11 Lots of Pics!

Since the ship left at 330pm we really didnt feel like we got a full day at Coz. but made it back to the pier in plenty of time and spent a little while browsing the shops at the pier. Typical touristy stuff. We made out way back to the ship, kids to AO, DW to nap and I watched for the ever present runners....but I was disappointed! None! I thought with the early departure there would be a whole bunch but it is a family cruise so maybe not so much! The C&A welcome back party was at 530pm in La Scala but I couldnt make it.

The evening show was Bill Pickney's original Drifters and Dw really wanted to catch it. Dinner in the MDR was average this evening - casual. We went to the late show and the guys were funny. A little past their prime although there was a younger guy there and at least 2 had been Drifters for a long time but not from the beginning. They put on a show that lasted a little less than an hour and was pretty good. I knew many of the songs. The Love and marriage game show was after the Drifters but we went to catch the second half of the NCAA National Championship game at the packed sportsbar. They brought seats out onto the promenade for the overflow and in a nice touch had a beer cart out there too! Blech -Kentucky won. What a shock!

This was the first night I saw a performance by Derek Lewis and his "Adult Day Care -At Night" show that took place every eve in the Pig & Whistle. The guy is manic and hilarious. I got a chance to chat with him after one of his shows and he seemed like a really nice guy. His show is a mix of karaoke (where he helps you out), comedy and the most ribald, dirty songs you can imagine. He did say he toned down the show quite a bit since it was a spring break cruise but I can only imagine what a full on Derek show must be like!! He would launch into one of his vulgar songs and if kids walked by on the promenade would switch over to "Puff the Magic Dragon"! loved the show and went every night for at least an hour. He played from 9-1230 and was always convinced (with tips!) to stick around a little while longer. I spent the remainder of the eve strolling the decks watching the sea go by! One of the reasons I love to cruise. Almost 5,000 people onboard and I found many spots so secluded that you would think you were the only one on the ship!

One other note about that evenings events - they had a party called the "Traffic Light Party" in the Viking Crown High Notes lounge from 1030-1am. Here is how the compass described it:

"Hang out with old friends, make some new ones, enjoy your favorite beverage and dance the night away with Synergy at this friendly mixer. Looking for a little romance? Wear a color describing your relationship status. Green=Single, Yellow=It's complicated, Red=Unavailable"

On a family cruise!!!!??? I never saw this type of party before on an RC cruise much less a spring break cruise! Just thought it was weird and people we talked to didn't understand it either!

Ah!!!! Grand Cayman! What could be better. Beautiful water, awesome shopping and the incredible tender process! Whaaaa....that is the sound of the needle slipping off the record. Grand Cayman is the 5th largest banking center in the world. There is $1 trillion in U.S. deposits there equaling $25 million per island inhabitant (based on 40,000 residents. I am into hardcore math)!

BUILD A STINKING PIER!

I am jumping ahead a little but we went to the Windjammer and took our time. The tender process requires a ticket if you want to be the first off the ship and those with early excursions got the first tickets. Open tendering didnt occur until 1100am but it was even later by the time we got on the tender. We were just going to shop so we just waited and were marched down to deck one where we went up and down crew only areas. It was interesting to see all the information posted on the walls for crew eyes only and eventually we made it onto the tender. There were 5 ships in port that day: Norwegian Sun, Celebrity Solstice, Voyager of the Seas, Carnival Legend and Carnival Glory.

I must confess that the tender over was as relaxing as anything I did all week. It was hot but the breeze was cool on the ocean and the tender moved among the cruise ships affording great views of the Voyager and the Carnival ships. The Solstice was a little ways off as was the Sun. A 15 minute ride gets you to the pier and off we went. We strolled amongst the shops. I tried on a $28,000 Ulysse Nardine watch and the salesman said he would give me a good deal. I suggested $500. He didnt smile! End of my negotiation!!! At least I could say I wore it for a minute! The shops were a little disappointing although there was a great Lalique strore for you crystal and sculpture lovers. The kids were getting antsy so we decided to go the legendary Hard Rock restaurant - Grand Cayman outpost. Be warned. The prices are in Grand Cayman dollars and a lunch consisting of 2 kids meals, 2 cokes, a salad and a beer cost $60! Wow! Somebody has to pay for all those guitars! The food was pretty good and a little change up from the WJ/Cafe Promenade.

More shopping - we saw a chicken running around the streets and a nest full of eggs - apparently the highlight of the kids day. The kids were getting tired so we went back to the pier for sno cones and another tender ride. Here are some pics:

I walked into a courtyard where there were some shops then down a little walk and found a duty free liquor and cuban cigar place. Hard to find. This guy came from Cuba and now rolls cigars where you can watch or have a cigar custom rolled. He had mild, medium and robust so I choose a medium and had that beautiful cigar that evening on one of my deck strolls. Smoooooth!

The ship was late leaving Grand Cayman and I had a busy evening ahead. We had tickets to the ice show called "Ice Odyssey". Showtimes were 7 and 9. There were also 2 shows on day 6 but it was the same performance. Studio B is a neat space and it is amazing what the skaters can do. I thought the show was some of the best entertainment that I had seen on any cruise. Maybe because it was unique and different but also because the performers were really good. There were a few spills here and there. The headliner was Irina Grigorin from Las Vegas. Didnt know they had a lot of skating in Vegas but she was nothing short of amazing. She came out and skated and used rings (think hula hoops) as her props but ended up with like 10 going around her body at one time. I cant keep one going for more than a few seconds! Plenty of seats were available and I was surprised at how many reserved seats there were for suite guests (those seats were yellow whereas the general seating seats were blue.

After the ice show kids to windjammer for a quick bite then to AO. DW and I had reservations at portofinos. I will scan in the menu and post it tomorrow. It was fantastic just as it was on the Radiance. I had genoa minestrone alla genovese, insalata rivera, and the filetto di manzo (delish!) while DW had carpaccio di tonno, a caesar salad, and risotto alla polpa di granchio e gamberetti. They also brought a carpaccio di manzo because we looked a little hungry! i made good use of the b1g1 wine C&A coupon.

After Portofino’s caught a little of the 70s party on the promenade but it was packed and it is the same on every ship so I didn’t stay long. Went to the late night comedy show with Rod Long and it was average. Only a couple of really funny jokes. Caught an hour of the Derek Lewis show and called it a day.
