Elation thoughts...for a family?

Hi There,

We are so happy to be planning our next cruise. We are planning for a summer cruise and we are looking at the Elation out of Texas. Having never been to Texas, we thought that we would spend a few days ahead of time sightseeing. It will be my husband, two daughters ( 10 and 8) and myself. Any thoughts or ideas on either the cruise or Galveston?

Thank you!!

Hi lisa, We are a family of 5, son 16, son 11, and daughter 10. We will be sailing 9/4/05 on Elation our of Galveston and am so very excited. It is labor day week, kids will have to miss 4 days of school, but for us it is much cheaper to go in September and that is what we have to do. I have researched quite a bit, found a motel for the 5 of us, in Galveston, on the seawall blvd (on the beach) with breakfast for 70.00, tax included. You also can leave your car there during the entire cruise for free. They have no shuttle to the pier but hubby will deliver us and luggage and then go back and take a cab to meet up with us. Will be happy to answer question here or at: lilmsonry1@cox.net

So very excited, haven't found anybody going with us yet though!!

Here are a few things to do on an extended stay in the Houston/Galveston area.

Houston:

Space Center Houston (NASA)- Lots of displays, exhibits, hands-on, etc.

Astroworld/Waterworld - Large theme park, water park with lots of roller coasters, rides, shows, etc.

Sports - Astros game in Minute Maid Park, Texans game in Reliant Stadium, tons of golf courses nearby.

Museums - Lots of choices from fine art, history, natural science (IMAX).

Aquarium - Large aquarium complex downtown, with some other zoo-like displays as well.

Houston Zoo - fairly large and modern zoo

For the computer/electronics geeks: Three (3) Fry's Electronics!

Galveston:

Moody Gardens - IMAX theater, Rainforest pyramid, beach activities, hotel, etc.

The Strand - Harbor business area in the 1800's, restored and turned into shops, restaurants, etc.

The Elissa - Iron hulled sailing ship, restored, and available for tours near the Strand.

Museums - Historical, including an airplane museum, and a fairly large train museum.

Architecture - Lots of old Victorian area homes have been restored and are available for tours.

Galveston beach - Lots of activities in/on the water. Water is not clear and blue like the Caribbean, though.

You can go to Galveston.com for more galveston information. You can get more information on the individual places with a Google search.

Weather in Houston in September is hot and muggy, be prepared! Winter typically comes in January, for 1-2 days.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Hi Lisa,

We'll be going in Aug. on the Elation and taking our 10 year old granddaughter on her first cruise. She is so excited, and we are counting the days!

Sailed last year with our family of boys 15, 15 and 17, never saw them much..the cruise was a great time...they did make it a big deal among the audience if you were from Texas but we forgive them and the people for that…yoo bad if your from TEXAS…LOL…....you'll have a great time!

Hi Lisa,

Galvaston is ok but don't expect it to be very pretty like the California or Florida beaches are. It's pretty dirty, though they have cleaned it up some in the recent few years. Be ware of the jellyfish if you are going to let the kids swim in the ocean! I have been there twice and got bitten both times!! OUCH.
