Tipping along the way

Recommended Posts

How much should I tip?

1. cab driver from airport to hotel?

2. porter at hotel to take luggage to my room?

3. hotel doorman who gets me a cab?

4. luggage guys at the dock?

5. room service delivery person on the ship?

6. cabin steward for extra services? (our gratuities are prepaid by the group I am in on the ship)

Thanks for your help.

tipping can be very personal - but here's my take:

1. cab driver from airport to hotel? roughly 15% of fare

2. porter at hotel to take luggage to my room? $5-$10 depending on amount of luggage and how helpful they are

3. hotel doorman who gets me a cab? a buck or two

4. luggage guys at the dock? $1 per bag, rounding up to $5 if I have four bags

5. room service delivery person on the ship? dollar bills that round up to about 15% of the charge

6. cabin steward for extra services? (our gratuities are prepaid by the group I am in on the ship) whatever you think appropriate.

May be different in NYC, but in N.O. (approx):

1. cab driver from airport to hotel? $8-10

2. porter at hotel to take luggage to my room? $5

3. hotel doorman who gets me a cab? $2

4. luggage guys at the dock? $1-2

5. room service delivery person on the ship? $1-2, depending on size of order

6. cabin steward for extra services? (our gratuities are prepaid by the group I am in on the ship) $10-20

3. hotel doorman who gets me a cab?

Funny story, people are saying $1 to $2. That's what I usally tip but one time in NY I only had a $20 so thats what I had to give the man. LOL and I HATED the hotel.

I am going to the mediteranean, and wanted to know: are the dock workers with the cruise line or with the city? I know that on ship it runs in US currency, but should I tip the dock porters with euros?

LishaD, As the dock workers will be Europeans you should tip them in Euro.

That is if you want to tip. Generally keep in mind that tipping in Europe is a different story than in the US. Workers, waiters and so on get decent wages. Tipping is not required to the same extent as it is in the States.

All U.S. ports use 'port authority' workers for luggage, not associated with the cruiselines. Not sure about other countries, but interesting question. Will be looking for other replies.:)
