Screwcork....(I almost feel naughty calling you that) Thanks so much! We are staying at the Constanza and it looks fairly close.

Carol, you are a wealth of information! THIS is GREAT! Thanks so very much. Checked out your blog and have it bookmarked. So kind of you for putting this up for all us.

Also a fan of fans, how bout that????

They have some beautiful ones in el Cortes department store in Barcelona

I think Screwcork already suggested that (see post #2)

If I were looking for something like a shawl in Barcelona, I think I would prefer to go to a small specialist shop. It is more likely to have been made in Spain rather than Taiwan

By the way the name of the chain of stores is El Corte Inglés (meaning The English Cut as in the cut or style of a suit)

Be very careful and distrustful of "small specialist shops" in Barcelona (most especially around the Las Ramblas and other touristy areas). They are all owned by people from Pakistan and, yes, sell mostly merchandise made in China, Vietnam, etc.

Even in the large department stores such as El Corte Inglés, things are not likely made in Spain anymore.

Why don't you buy a really nice scarf from Spain's premier luxury brand Loewe. They've just redone their flagship store on Paseo de Gracia and it is beautiful.

There you are assured of buying quality merchandise (although even Loewe is not really Spanish anymore -- it's been owned by Louis Vuitton for many years).

Kind regards,

Gunther and Uta

I don't think the shop I mentioned at post #3 is run by people from Pakistan and I think what they sell is genuine Spanish shawls and abanicos.

The OP said they wanted a Spanish shawl, that is why I suggested this shop.

Have you seen this shop? The items are not cheap but IMHO are the genuine article.

Carol:

Haven't seen that shop and I do trust your judgment. Just giving a general warning about the stores around the Las Ramblas area.

I know what you mean. Around our area, especially in Benidorm, a lot of the shops are run by Chinese.

Mind you, these are good places to pick up some bargains of general household goods and clothes.
