Cell Phone on Danube Cruise

Sailing Passau to Budapest. Is the cell phone service OK? We're taking smartphones to call each other and to the US:

 

iPhone 4S and

Droid Incredible 2.

There will very likely be areas of no cell coverage, just as there are here at home.

 

We use texting and SKYPE mobile to keep costs down when traveling in Europe and also activate international calling plan in case we have no choice but to make a regular call. SKYPE works in wifi hot spots and costs just cents a minute. Worked well on AMA and Avalon when in areas where we had decent connection speeds.

Also, try the FREE app called VIBER.

Calls and text messages can be made anywhere. I send my clients on river cruises and they can text me while they are onboard. :) Love those pics!

we had no problem making calls on our Christmas Time cruise from Budapest to Nuremberg.

We are using T-mobile and our phones automatically locked on to the local networks.

It might be different with other carriers.

There is a major cost difference calling and paying high rates using local networks and using apps that work over wifi which are free or close, fyi. My Skype Mobile is 6 cents per minute and my At&T international plan with discount is 99 cents per minute plus 50 cents per text.

 

Pete, thanks for the heads up on Viber. I just loaded it on my ipad and iphone and will exercise it next week from the Caribbean.

Be sure and "Turn Off" your Data Roaming!! You could accidently end up with a bill for $1,000's.....
