Island to Alaska with Pictures

Hey, everyone. I've made it to an almost upright position, and hopefully will get something out this afternoon. But, I did want to take just a second and thank my wife for putting up with me for the last 25 years.

Thanks Dear.

Hey Cathy -

Nancy & I went on the South America cruise in February of last year. It was our first long cruise and I had the idea that we might want to see the SA equivalent of Alaska's glaciers. It turned out that the glariers along the water were pretty small -- which makes sense since there isn't much of a land mass to keep them from melting.

I didn't know about posting reviews, so I just emailed the trip out to everyone I'd ever met. My guess is that I would travel well with Carl since we seem to have the same slightly sardonic sense of humor coupled with a zest for poking around where we have never been before.

NOTE to CARL: That's a compliment

I went ahead and started posting it at: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=187305

I apologize in advance for this, I'm still foggy headed.

We grabbed the cameras and started off. This is good, we are doing something… What kind of vacation is it if all you do is sit around and rest? If I want to sit around and rest, I’ll pretend to be sick, and just lay in bed all day. So, Come on dear, let’s go. Move it, move it. Hurry. Up. UP, up we go. Lets see…where to start? I know, let’s start at the top. After all in the immortal words of that wonderful movie… “It’s the best.” (That movie being Pretty Woman, which I just happened to be watching right before I wrote this. Funny how that seems to work.) We walk the 8 steps from our room to the elevator, and ride up to deck 14. I know it’s not the top, but it’s as high as this sultry talking elevator will take us. (Have I mentioned already that I enjoy riding in the elevators? Why, yes, I do believe you have.)

“Deck 14, Lido Deck” the elevator announces. We step out on the Lido deck, but we’re not to the top yet. We have to get up to the Sports deck to get all of the way to the top. I’m still a little weak from yesterday, and I’m getting a little confused.

How many of you are like me, and are confused by the deck plans available for cruise ships? The Sun deck, the Sports deck, the Lido deck, the Aloha deck… Then when you get on the elevator it’s “Deck 14, Lido Deck”, Deck 13, Oops, there’s no deck 13??? “Deck 12, Aloha Deck,” “Deck 11,Baja Deck,” “Deck 10, Caribe Deck”, … “It just doesn’t make sense, Admiral” (I’m in a movie quoting mode. Can anyone guess which movie that quote was from?)

Note to Princess – I’m confused. If you are going to number your decks, and then have a word that begins with a letter to somewhat correspond alphabetically to the number of the deck, WHY DON”T YOU HAVE THE TWO MATCH UP? For instance, if you have a deck one it should be the Aloha deck. Deck two should be the Baja deck and so on. Or if you want to start from the top, deck 15 (or maybe 16) should be the Aloha deck, and deck 14 (or 15) should be the Baja deck, and so on. It gets confusing when you have the letters and numbers match up starting in the middle of the ship.

And then there’s the Sports Deck. Is the Sports Deck really a deck? No elevator goes up to it. There are some well maintained stairs that will take you up there, but does it really qualify as a deck. Or since it’s 2 parts of a deck is it 1 deck or 2 different decks. Doesn’t the word deck imply that the floor is the same? If the floor areas are separated, is it still the same deck? What’s sporty about a Splash Pool? Shouldn’t they call the Splash Pool area of the Sports Deck the “Wanna get Away” Deck? Or, the You might get a little wet if you stay around here deck? And what’s the use of a splash pool in Alaska? (Pardon me, but even I’m confused by all of this, so I’m dropping this line of discussion right here.)

Another thing that confuses me is the elevator thing. The forward elevators go up to deck 15, while the elevators by our cabin only go up to deck 14. The elevators in the atrium only go up to deck 8. The midship elevators go to deck 15, but there is no elevator on the ship that goes to deck 16.

No elevator goes down below deck 4. I wonder what’s down there? Is that where they keep the sea monsters? Yea, I know they say that’s where the crew quarters are, but have any of you ever been down there?

STOP. Wait just a doggone minute. “Get a grip on yourself man.” Will you stop and just focus on the tour of the ship? You’re almost delusional. Maybe you should put off writing any more until you feel a little better.

No, I’m fine, or at least well enough to continue. We started by looking around deck 14, since we were already there. We stuck our heads into the Fitness Center (the only time all week we even came close to going in there). The equipment looked new and well kept. There were some flat belly types that were pounding away on the treadmills and exer-cycles. It looked like a couple of 30-something ladies were trying to sweat off a couple of pounds so they could get into their slinky dresses that night. But again, we didn’t stay there very long. Exercise might be contagious. (Oooh, shudder)

We turned the other way and walked through the sliding doors into the Lotus Spa. (Again another area we studiously avoided all week.) I don’t know much about Health Spas (the word Health is not in my vocabulary), but this one looked very nice. For us there just isn't any need for a spa, being that we are already perfect. (Yea, right) We just don't do spas, In fact, when someone asked my wife if we got a relaxing massage while we were on the ship she answered, “If I would have been any more relaxed they would have had to pour me out of bed.” But, from the outside, the spa looked good.

Just inside the spa area is the mid-ship elevator. We hopped on these elevators and headed up to Deck 15, Sun Deck.

Due to my lack of strength, I'll have to leave the Sun Deck for later.

Oops forgot to post my rating for the Health areas of the ship.

Rating for the Health Spa and Workout Area - I

Was that rating an "I" as in incomplete -- the grade they gave me in college when I didn't show up?

I, hmmmm, what does the "I" mean?

Let me give you a partial list of those that have come to mind.

Incredible – that doesn’t seem to fit.

Indescribable – nope I could probably describe it if I wanted to.

Irritating – yep sure was irritating watching those skinny people work out.

ICU – where I’d be if I spent an hour in the workout room.

Ideal – as in perfect? How would I know?

Ignominious – there we go, total loss of dignity or pride. That one works.

Illegal – getting warmer.

Illuminating – only to the people in the tanning booth. Was there a tanning booth, I don’t know.

Imaginary – as far as I know it was.

Imbroglio – look that one up for yourself.

Impassable – sure seemed that way to me.

Impractical – for me yes, for others no.

Irritating – definitely, just knowing that it’s there. Calling, Carl, Carl, come work out Carl… but, that's not it.

Irregular – maybe.

Should I tell you what the real word is or wait until tomorrow?

Let’s wait. We'll let you guess a little bit. Maybe there'll be a little something for the winner...

Carl, are you being a pain in the a** today that you had to thank your wife, or is it your anniversary? If so, congratulations! (if not, quit your whining and get out of bed, you prolly just have a case of the sniffles and are milking it for all its worth like most adult males I know)

We are booked July 6 for a cruise tour on the island. I have heard no-se-ums can be a problem. Were they for you?

Alg, Are you sure it's July 6 on the Island? We have a one week cruise on the Island Princess beginning July 2.

IDIOTIC like some of my DH's ramblings about our 25th anniversary cruise last month to Alaska. And by the way our actual anniversary was 6-6 and we had a very nice day--thank you, DH. And Sunday he was really sick--he caught a virus from me that laid me lower than a dead skunk on Friday.
