We have yet do do a River Cruise but were considering it. Do you have to walk a great deal on the excursions. It seems most of the excursions are walking tours. How difficult are they?

On Uniworld (and maybe others) there is a "slow walkers" group if walking is a problem.

I often do not go on the excursions, but my husband does all of them.
Fun to stay behind and just stroll the little towns. Or stay on the ship and just relax.

Some are bus tours of the bigger cities. You can stay on the bus while others walk. Uniworld's Cruise Companion uses icons to describe whether the walks are strenuous.

Try one - you'll love it.

I have been on river cruises on the Danube and Rhine. The city tours are usually a couple hours of walking in relatively flat towns, many with cobblestones. You don't have to be athletic, but do have to be able to walk on cobblestone. AMA waterways had a "gentle walking" tour on which my 80 year old mother was able to do fine.

If you want to do all of the included tours it really doesn't matter which line you choose--they will build up to almost too much. Cobble stones, docking 1/2 mile or more from features etc. We did everything+ and I ended up with turf toe, only solved by a cortisone shot when we got home.
My answer is; decide how important the sight seeing is, if a lot, you'll have to walk a lot:)

We were on an Avalon cruise from Budapest to Amsterdam in August, each stop had a walking tour, a few of the stops had a slow walkers group, where they were taken by a small coach and a little train in two towns, walking is generally easy, but the cobblestones mean you have to be quite vigilant. Most tours were between 1.5 and 3 hours with free time after that, some people didnt do all the walking tours..or occasionally wandered off to do their own thing. Nothing is compulsory, so you please yourself how little or much you want to do.
Docking position can make quite a difference to the amount of walking, especially on the return back to the ship..we had coaches into the towns alot of the time, but made our own way back to the ship.
Definitely take a pair of shoes that are comfortable to walk in.
