SUV car rental vs taxi

Hi! We are 6 adults and want to have the freedom of doing whatever we want.

We can rent an SUV or hire a taxi. Any suggestions as to which is the best option.

Any ideas as how much it cost to rent a taxi for a day vs rent an suv. Suggestions appreciated. Thx in advance.

A full size SUV will be about $75 or so for the day. Add the required temp license fee of $25, 17% VAT tax, $1.50 evironmental levy, fuel at about $5.60 a gallon and maybe the optional insurance of about $15 per day it can be expensive. It is nice to have the freedom of having your own vehicle but for a 1 day visit I would opt for a tour/taxi operator.

This is one of the few (also Dominica) places where you should opt to use a taxi.

 

Most others islands are better to rent if more than 3 people.

Are they readily available at the port, the larger ones for 6? Should I try to reserve a car and driver ahead of time? Any idea of the cost?

There are many tour/taxi operators at the port. Many of them drive larger vans that can easily accomodate 6 adults. You could make a reservation ahead of time. The cost can vary depending on where you want to go. Many are negotiable on their prices. It may depend on how many ships are in port on the day you are there. Good luck

Well, you probably could reserve an SUV - it's spacious and very comfortable. Plus, if you rent it for a weekend, you are free to drive however much you want, not worrying about bothering a taxi driver. And if you want a chic drive, use luxury SUV rental services. We got plenty of them in NYC, like RealCar or Sixt. ;)
