Dominican Republic

Been to the DR for visits more than 20 times, most recently two months ago in June. Dominicans are not bad people looking for a chance to steal from you or hurt you. That's not in them. What they are is compulsive deal-makers, and they want to get the best in any deal. They love it! This means they'll happily overcharge you or try to stick you with buying something you don't want at an inflated price. It's all part of the challenge. If you understand that is what is going on, and you are very clear in your own mind what you want and what you are willing to pay, you'll do fine. Actually, you can start to laugh about it and appreciate the lengths they will go to - it's a different culture - enjoy it.

Do not ever get into a taxi without agreeing on the price first. If the driver tries to overcharge when he's collecting the fare at the end, throw the money you agreed on at him and walk away. He's not going to run after you and try to kill you, he's going to pick up his money. Don't handle something if you have no intention of buying it. If you show any interest in something, the Dominican will think he's already made the sale and it's just a question of how much he can get you to pay.

The beaches are extraordinarily beautiful on this island, something you should not miss. So go to a resort for the day rather than staying on board. Or get off and wander around if that's what you like doing. Don't be afraid. Just be very firm.
