jandjtexas Posted September 27, 2013 #1 Share Posted September 27, 2013 Just saw Texas is going to start taxing cigs and alcohol from cruise ships starting in January. News report did not say if would be the same tax as buying from a store or not.
RuthlessBoss Posted September 28, 2013 #2 Share Posted September 28, 2013 How can they. We don't buy them in Texas.
pinkbarbie Posted September 28, 2013 #3 Share Posted September 28, 2013 I saw this on the news tonight. TABC has always kept a limit as to how much you could bring in. I guess now they want their piece. Will Carnival charge the taxes when we buy the stuff? What about stuff we buy in port. Is it included? Since 7 day trips come in on Sundays, how will that work since you can't buy liquor till noon here? I wonder how this will all work
ed_k_tx Posted September 28, 2013 #4 Share Posted September 28, 2013 (edited) Found these. http://www.tabc.state.tx.us/faq/personal_importation.asp http://www.tabc.state.tx.us/poe/tax_rates.asp I don't think they have ever had agents at the cruise docks before, only at the land crossings. Dubl_T Posted September 28, 2013 #5 Share Posted September 28, 2013 How can they. We don't buy them in Texas. I call it 'Government against the people'. Government by the people, for the people went away about 30 years ago. Texas has such a large segment of non-tax-paying residents that the few of us that do pay taxes get hammered more and more every day.

It you hear of other details would appreciate an update to the post. If I hear more I will post also
Shoaffy Posted January 10, 2014 #7 Share Posted January 10, 2014 Sailing out of Bayport in Feb for the first time on princess,do not smoke and only buy alcohol as gifts. But from the looks of what I see Texas should be trying to entice the cruise customers and there are many choices!
txmom11 Posted January 10, 2014 #8 Share Posted January 10, 2014 It only applies to those of us who are Texas residents. We don't buy tobacco or alcohol to bring back on our trips, but this stinks for those who do.

More than fair trade off I would say:)
txmom11 Posted January 10, 2014 #10 Share Posted January 10, 2014 We pay higher peppery taxes and sales taxes than some places, but our property is more reasonably priced than most as well. We are very blessed. I hate paying state income tax--just rubs me the wrong way.

UNtaxed liquor or cigarettes Edited January 10, 2014 by aka-texas
txmom11 Posted January 10, 2014 #12 Share Posted January 10, 2014 Well, shoot, I misunderstood it then. I'm sorry for the rest of you as well.
CoconutJD Posted January 10, 2014 #13 Share Posted January 10, 2014 Not true. It applies to anyone bringing liquor or cigarettes into Texas. UNtaxed liquor or cigarettes If you are not a resident and are leaving the state within 48 hours, you do not have to pay the import tax. So it really only applies to Texas residents, or people taking an extended time getting out of Texas.
forwardcabin Posted January 11, 2014 #14 Share Posted January 11, 2014 Not a big deal to us. Considering the price we pay for 2 liters of Crown, with the additional tax of $7.25, the total is still much cheaper than buying at the local liquor store. radlad68 Posted January 11, 2014 #15 Share Posted January 11, 2014 It's only for Texas residents. Nothing new, I'll take our lower cost of living and no state taxes :-)
jtwanabe Posted March 7, 2014 #16 Share Posted March 7, 2014 I think it only applies to non-Texans if they are going to be in the state for m ore than 48 hrs. It's really a glorified use tax. That's why they tax you regardless of where you bought. Still pretty petty for such a great state. We all work our you know whats off paying for the 50% that don't pay taxes and so we try to get a little r&r and they get you there too.
