crompton21 Posted October 7, 2013 #1 Share Posted October 7, 2013 There appears to be a fairly common use of the description "Butlins at sea", used obviously in a negative way. Inorder to know what Butlins is like, then surely the reviewer must have been to Butlins recently. If they are then are shocked that they find that people (like them) who are clearly devotees of Butlins turn up on the same cruise, why are they so unhappy? Or am I missing something? Hi de hi. Those who use the term in a derogatory manner have no idea of the immense popularity and cultural significance Butlin's had as a major force in improving the standard of holidays for the British public. Sir Billy Butlin had immense vision in promoting a new holiday lifestyle, and the same can be said for the cruising industry. There are similarities in the Full Board concept and the varied entertainment options available. The way in which several thousand people are catered for on an extended cruise takes an incredible amount of planning to make them a success. As such the term Butlin's at Sea shouldn't really be read in a derogatory manner at all.
rubydoobydoo Posted October 7, 2013 #3 Share Posted October 7, 2013 Used to love Butlins when the kids were little, we have even stayed in budget accommodation once, now that was an experience never to be repeated !

oldfella73 Posted October 7, 2013 #5 Share Posted October 7, 2013 We went tp Pontin's many years ago had a good time and won a car scrounge which included obtaining a Policeman's Helmet. However I digress. Closest comparison is Accomodation and Entertainment Principal similarities would seem to be a Swimming Pool and Theatre. Added to this may be Casino's, Bingo and Whist Drives but this may not be universal. No Redcoats or, thank goodness, fairground type amusements. The accomodation on board a cruise ship is by far the superior, particularly the food. The entertainment, we have never indulged bu from what I have heard, again, seems much better than Butlins. No a cruise is not "Butlins at Sea" as far as we are concerned

Neither, I am afraid my legs don't see the light of day, I am strictly a jeans type of girl :D it is surprising to me that I love cruising so much as I actually hate dressing up !
