I've sailed out of NOLA twice and thought the trip down the Mississippi was quite interesting. While the views are not mind blowing, it still is interesting to see the rigs and refineries. I think the most interesting thing I saw was on the way back into NOLA on my last trip. If you are up late at night be sure to be on your balcony or on deck, when the ship crosses back into the Mississippi from the Gulf there is almost a perfect line where the crystal blue water of the Gulf meets the muddy brown water of the river. It was a pretty cool sight- even in the dark!

In jan, we were in the Mississippi by at least 7 pm last night, because we got to see the river pilot and refineries through dinner. I know we docked very late night, or extremely early morning, depending how you look at it.

 

The ship docked on the cruise before us around 4am.....I was at the hilton riverside and it woke me up with the horn, which I truly enjoyed knowing my ship was there!

I will be going out of NO this summer for the first time. My question is what time does the casino and shops open? I know it's usually once the ship gets into international waters, does this mean I have to wait 8 hours or so?

 

I would also like to know this?

Casino usually opens shortly after departure but the shops usually open the first day at sea.

That would be so much fun for sure....maybe we should have a guide if our Roll Call decides to do a M&G somewhere topside during sail-a-way!

As WLHyatt mentioned the timing can vary but usually sometime between 10:30pm - 12:30am. I've done this itinerary on RCCL, CCL and Princess and it varies. Just make sure you don't go to sleep early on the final night. :)

Thanks for this info. I sort of had the feeling it would be rather late before reaching the Miss on the final night of the cruise. By 10:30 PM...I am sure I will be heading for bed, so I guess I will miss it all.:(

We were on the Sunshine a few weeks ago, and were sailing up river returning to port on Saturday evening. We picked up the river pilot at the mouth of the Mississippi at about 9PM. I was on my balcony about 11PM looking at the shoreline and other river traffic when the Carnival Elation passed us while going down stream only about 150 feet off of our port side. It was closely followed by the RCCL Serenade of the Seas. Our cruise was ending, and theirs were just beginning.

The timing of those sailings are interesting. If you saw the Elation when you were headed in that means you also saw them outbound (whether you knew it or not). The Elation 5 day sailings begin on a Monday and end on a Saturday. So when you were headed out they were making their way in to turn over then head back out to Cozumel and Progreso, before coming in on Saturday to turn over again. That would have been the third set of passengers on that ship since the first time you saw it.
