Public transportation to Ile de Re - La Rochelle

Does anyone have detailed instructions for using public transportation to get to Ile de RE? Not interested in doing the ships tour since we will over night in La Rochelle.

Have you been to La Rochelle before? We had a day there last fall. The Vieux Port area is charming and well worth walking around on your own. (And make sure to bring back some salted caramels!)

There's a toll of €16 to cross the bridge to Ile de Ré in the summer so something to be aware of (€8 in the off-season).

 

There are also shuttles mainly from the main rail station (the last "empire" style one built in France).
