Mal de Debarquement Syndrome

Thank you everyone. I'm going to ask my GP to refer me to the Balance Clinic to see if exercises can help. I've also contacted the MdDS who sent a very useful leaflet. They also say that sitting in a rocking chair, riding in a car or sitting in a small boat (no I don't have one!) can provide temporary relief. They also say Stemetil, Serc etc don't help but low dose antidepressants do. Again I will talk to my GP.

Thank you all for your advice I really appreciate it.

Sorry to hear you are suffering this Pat. Hopefully your GP can refer you to a balance specialist and/or a physio specialising in balance problems. I was experiencing balance problems for a period of time and it was very frustrating. You feel awful but your symptoms are invisible to those around you so its hard for others to understand what you are going through. Good luck.

RESPECT ???? Calling a chiropractor a quack shows total lack of respect for a recognized profession.

Sounds like to me you are a chiropractor yourself, or one of their gullible patients....I guess I should say that those that follow the Mixer school of treatment have "some: benefit, but those that follow the Straight school of thought are outright charlatans.

Do you have any suggestions to offer the OP to help the problem, or is your purpose to only make silly remarks to those who do ???

Yes, my suggestion to the OP is to not use a chiropractor for an inner ear problems...or anything else really...

I understand that you don't like nor respect chiropractors.

I hope OP doesn't take your advice because that is one of the professions that can help correct this problem with the Epley maneuver.

Thank you to everyone for their advice, I respect all your opinions & am grateful for them.

I've got an appointment with an ENT consultant who specialises in MdDS but its not until November (typical of NHS here in UK!!). I've been prescribed some new drugs today which can take a couple of weeks to get in the system. So fingers crossed they help.

I've also been told the Epley manoeuvre won't help in my particular case but that Cranial Osteopathy may help so I'm looking into that.

I will let you know how I get on with all my appointments.

Thank you all again.

No more news to date. I have an appointment with a cranial-osteopath tomorrow to see if she can help as she comes highly recommended for balance problems. My ENT consultants appointments not until November so I guess I have to "soldier" on until then. I have noticed the swayings not quite as bad as it was so hopefully it WILL go away soon!!

  • 10 months later...

I acquired this from cruising July 2014. It is now July 2015 and I still have it. There is a support group on facebook you may want to join. No one can understand what we are going through unless they are going through it also. That being said I went on another cruise in August 2014 and the MdDS did not get any better or worse. I am also going on a cruise August 2015 so that I can feel better for a week. I know that when I get off this cruise the rocking will probably come back but the week I am on it will be heavenly because the motion of the ship will make it stop while I am on the ship.:)
