It doesn't really work that way. Once you go through security you probably won't be able to leave unless it's an emergency and you probably won't want to go back through.

You can however drop your luggage off with a porter and do whatever you want, just make sure you are in the terminal before their cutoff time. It's a fairly long walk to anything else but it's doable.

As for location it'll either be at the Julia or Erato St terminal. They are next door to each other and near a large mall and across the street from Harrah's casino.

Thanks. Maybe we'll just do what we want to do and then check in. Might be more trouble than it's worth to even drop off our bags and then leave. It's RCCL, so it should be Julia St. terminal.

They could make it much easier to do touristy things near the port but I'm sure the TSA has a hand in making it difficult. For instance there is a stair well from the mall to the cruise terminal but last time I was there it was chained shut.

In Galveston for example there is plenty to do downtown and you can easily walk to the terminal. You can drop your bags off and walk next door or across the street to tons of restaurants and shops.

In New Orleans there is so much more to do nearby but the convention center is right between you and everything else and you have to walk around it to get anywhere.
