Nana57 Posted November 25, 2014 #1 Share Posted November 25, 2014 I called Travel Guard to get a quote. I am concerned about the medical evacuation insurance. They told me that it does not take you to the hospital of your choice, but to a hospital they choose that would treat me. Does anyone know about this. I thought I could go to a hospital of my choice if needed. Is $100,000 for medical evacuation enough. I'm planning a trip to Italy.
klfrodo Posted November 25, 2014 #2 Share Posted November 25, 2014 Very few (if any) travel insurances will take you to a hospital of your choice. My thoughts are that if I'm in such bad shape that I need to be evacuated, I haven't got the luxury to sit back and evaluate which hospital I want to be treated at. My heart attack isn't going to wait. However, there are additional policies that you can purchase (they're not "Travel Insurance") like Medjet Assist that will fly you to a hospital of your choice once you've become stable and require continued care. Side Note I actually had this conversation with my employer provided heath insurance provider. (Blue Cross) I asked them if I was out of State, got sick or injured, would they get me back home? The answer was No. They would only transport me to the closest facility that could treat my condition. I asked a follow-up question of,, OK, now I'm stabilized but require continued care. Will you transport me so I can be closer to my family back home? The answer was No. That cost would not be covered. Therefore,,,, Medjet Assist for me.
