The tram is located in the street in front of the cruise port. You can purchase tickets for the tram from the newsstand for €1 each. Be sure to validate the ticket in the machine on the tram.

You want the #1 tram and you take it to the Porta Nolana Circumvesuviana station, which is the first stop after the tram turns left away from the waterfront onto Corso Giuseppe Garibaldi.

At the station purchase a ticket to Pompei Scavi (Aziendale for €2,60). Take the next train to Sorrento and get off at Pompei Scavi. (Train schedule here: http://www.eavsrl.it/web/sites/default/files/orariautomobilisti/NapoliSorrento_New2015.pdf)

To return, purchase an Integrato ticket at the Pompei Scavi Circumvesuviana station for €3,20. This ticket will be good for both the train ride and the tram back to the port. Return train schedule is here: http://www.eavsrl.it/web/sites/default/files/orariautomobilisti/Orario%20Sorrento_Napoli.pdf

I have just done this myself (on Sat 16th May) HOWEVER you don't need to buy a €1 tram ticket. At the newsstand you can buy the €3.20 "TIC NA-3" ticket which INCLUDES the tram fare to Porta Nolana train station. You MUST validate the ticket in the stamping machine on the tram.

It will only save you €1 but will of course save you time having to buy a ticket at Porta Nolana station.

The #1 tram takes about 10 minutes from the cruise terminal to Porta Nolana station. When there, the trains are downstairs from street level and there are several platforms. Just check the indicator boards for the train going to Sorrento (that's the end of the line)

Pompei Scavi is about 30 mins from Naples. The train is basic with hard seats but it is very cheap and avoids the congested roads. The Scavi station is about 2 mins walk from the entrance to the ruins. Entry to that is €11.

Now, if you want to continue to Sorrento, you could buy a single ticket for €2.20... again, the train takes about 30 mins and the station is about 5 mins from the main square in Sorrento.

To return to Naples you can get the train back (you will need a "TIC NA-5" ticket for about €5.00) which will get you back to Porta Nolana but also includes tram / buses within Naples.

We however got the Alilauro boat back accross the bay, It costs €15, takes 30 mins and drops you right by the cruise terminal and avoids the rickety train! You just have to get down from the upper part of Sorrento to the port. There is a lift / elevator down, or I think there are shuttle buses but we used the lift.

For reference, we alighted the ship at 8am, were in Pompei about 9.15am (allowing for ticket buying and awaiting trams and trains). We spent enough time walking around Pompei to see what we wanted too and were in Sorrento for an hour or so before getting back to Naples cruise port about 3pm.

That left us enough time to explore a bit of Naples before we had to be on board for 6pm.

Enjoy!!

You are right, this is the ideal ticket (Biglietto Integrato) if you can find it. Many newsstands don't carry all of the different types of tickets, so if you can't get the Integrato you can follow the original directions.
