Taking food back to your cabin

That would explain a lot then. In the U.S., even the 4-star hotels have room service trays out in the hall. So it didn't seem at all odd when we saw plates on our ship.

 

Maybe it is a cultural thing in the US. :) I would keep them inside or take them elsewhere by myself. Paying someone just to remove them, whatever income someone might have, it is a waste of money.

Many of us don't leave our plates outside the hotel room or ship's cabin here in the US. I've never heard of a hotel or cruise line that charges for someone to remove room service or other plates.
