New York long-term parking

We will be cruising out of NY for the first time in September and need suggestions for parking. Everything we have found is around $25/day. Is this about what we can expect?

That's not a bad price, parking at the pier is $40 per day.

Doing a park/sleep at Newark airport and taking your luggage on the train or airport bus is another option. $25/day sounds very cheap for NYC. You do realize that for such a price, your car may be warehoused on a parking lift in very close quarters.

 

Another option is to park your car at Port Imperial for $15 in Weehawken NJ and take the ferry across to West 39th St.

 

Lodging a car in Manhattan can be a significant financial liability.

Folks seem to have had a good experience wth the ferry. If you are two or more people, one person and the luggage can be dropped off at the ferry terminal entrance. The cost is $9/pp and the ferry is accessible. On the other side you can wak to the pier, hail a cab, or use one of the free buses to get closer to the terminal.

Thanks for the additional information! We are researching this option. Our problem in all of this is that we have two vehicles and 8 people we will have to convince to go this route. I'm all for it as it will save us some money.

So your parking for two cars at the pier would be $560 plus the tunnel toll of $28, so about $588. Parking in NJ would be $210 plus $144 in ferry fares. If you have kids under 6-11, they are $6 and under 6 free.

 

The ferry docks at 39th St. and the pier will be in the low 50's. The ferry offers free bus service that will get you much closer to the pier. Perhaps someone who uses this bus connection can comment on the details of how it works. http://www.nywaterway.com/50thSt57thStOffPeakBus.aspx

 

So you have a choice of walking 10+ short NY blocks, taking taxis (perhaps a combo of walking and luggage in a taxi), or bus and a short walk.

Add'l info - it's a 9 block long walk from NY Waterway's W. 39th Street terminal/pier to the MCT, the gate pedestrian entrance at W. 48th Street is easily accessible. Google has the distance at .6 mile or a 10 minute walk, more like 15 to 20 minutes pulling luggages - so it's to all's advantage to pack light - using the Waterway ferries. Unless one is going for 2 weeks - best to, IMO, not use those 29" int'l suitcases as my suggestions. Exiting the ferry & facing 12th. Avenue, the free shuttle buses will be lined up - there are different routes & one will travel north on 12th Avenue toward 57th Street (ask, that's the one you wanted to be on ... another route will be marked Times Square or 42nd. Street and a 3rd. route south toward Macy's / Herald Square, etc. etc.)

 

Neither the ferries or the shuttle buses are designed for travelers with bigger pieces of luggage, backpacks & carry-on sizes can squeeze on - most of the buses have 2 sets of doors, some larger & some smaller (like those airbus rental car shuttles, except no racks). There should be a designated stop near 48th Street on 12th Avenue. Upon disembarkation, it's probably easiest to just walk back to the Waterway pier.

 

Or, turn left & just walk with the luggage along the bike/pedestrian path on the waterfront, there's no need to cross 12th. Avenue, you will walk toward Circle Lines & the Intrepid Museum and see Pier 88 directly in ahead.
