Hi, Last time we were in Italy we went from Naples to Pompeii by train and then on to Sorrento. At Sorrento we had lunch, a little shopping and went back to Naples via the hydrofoil. We are planning to take our granddaughters on a cruise for their 16 birthdays in May 2016. and were wondering if this is still viable.

Yes, this is still perfectly doable. From the ship you will go to the Circumvesuviana station (Porta Nolana), then take the train to Pompeii. After your stop there, take the same train (continuing in the same direction) to Sorrento. If you done it before, you probably know that some shops in Sorrento will close from around 1:00 to 3:00 (or even a little later).

I haven't done the hydrofoil from Sorrento to Naples but just be sure the docking location of the hydrofoil is Molo Beverello (as there is apparently more than one).

I have done this exact trip by train and it was a wonderful day. We docked right next to Molo Beverelo, and leaving the ship and walking toward the road, on the right-hand side there was a little tourist building where we bought tickets for the tram to get to the train station, plus our train tickets. We boarded on the street right outside, and it's only a few stops to the train station. If I recall correctly it's the first stop after the tram makes the left-hand turn and goes up the hill. It's not well marked or announced so you have to be in the lookout for the Circumvesuviana sign.

We went to Herculaneum instead of to Pompeii, but it's exactly the same route. We had a nice lunch in Sorrento and a bit of a wander about the town. You have to walk down the hill to the docking area, where there is an outdoor patio, a good spot for a cool beverage before boarding the hydrofoil.
