Rare TLCOhio Posted January 7, 2018 Author #26 Share Posted January 7, 2018 (edited) From the Boston Globe travel section this morning, they have this headline: “Eight top travel destinations for 2018” with these highlights: “Grenada possesses both stunning tropical beaches and a capital city (St. George’s) so picturesque that it looks as if it were peeled from a painting. Due to its position at the southern edge of the hurricane belt, the island is generally spared from storms, making vacation planning slightly easier than it is for other islands. For those looking to escape the world of corporate high-rise resorts, Grenada is far less developed than its Caribbean neighbors, but still offers a fantastic range of hotel options.” Nice highlights on an island that we super enjoyed visiting, exploring and experiencing. It was for the Mekong River!! Plus, plus!! Well-pleased with these countries, especially Cambodia, plus the ship, staff, food, tours, etc. On my live/blog, connected below, there are dozens of pictures and many details to document these fun adventures and travels. Happy on the live/blog to answer any and all questions, share more info/background, etc. Now, we shift our focus and attention to mid November, 2018, for our Athens to Dubai, 20-day cruise with Oceania, including our first visits to the Holy Lands, Egypt, Middle East, etc. Many options to consider and logistics to research. Keep hearing great things from other travelers about Oceania, the staff, their food, etc. Look forward to comparing Oceania versus other cruise lines we have experienced, who has what plus and minus factors, etc. THANKS! Rare TLCOhio Posted September 10, 2018 Author #28 Share Posted September 10, 2018 From the Travel Section of the London/UK Sunday Times this morning, they had this headline: “Grenada: the best beaches, hotels and restaurants” with these highlights: “Holidaying in Grenada is as difficult as saying yes to that second rum punch. It’s a surprisingly unspoilt island with rainforest-clad volcanic peaks, classic golden sands and bewitching snorkelling and diving. St George’s, the topsy-turvy capital, has an old-school charm, with waterfront restaurants serving local treats such as curried coconut shrimp and nutmeg ice cream, while the gaudy roadsides are daubed with red, green and gold, the colours of the national flag. Families will appreciate the low-rise hotels, with easy beach access and friendly, long-serving staff, while foodies are in for a treat thanks to an abundance of spices, tropical fruits, chocolate and rum. Almost all the resorts are in the southwest, as are the best beaches, so hire a car or book tours to see more.” YES, we loved Grenada when we visited and this profile brings back many nice memories. Many options and potentials to consider are outlined in this article. Rare TLCOhio Posted October 6, 2018 Author #29 Share Posted October 6, 2018 From the Travel Section of the London/UK Telegraph yesterday, they had this headline: “Best destinations for January sun” for their list of their top-15 locations in the world to go for fun warmth. Glad we were able to enjoy Grenada in early 2015. It was super fun and nicely warm!! Here are their highlights for Grenada and why they rated this island so highly: "Trouble in paradise? No more. It seems remarkable now to think that Grenada was the scene of a US invasion in 1983, America flexing its muscle in its (then) ongoing tussle with Cuba over influence in the Caribbean. Fast forward three decades and Grenada is as far removed from a war zone as can be imagined; a fair-weather friend on the southern limits of the Atlantic hurricane belt – it has experienced only three such gusts in 50 years." Full story at: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/advice/Winter-sun-seeker-where-to-go-in-January/ THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio Did a June 7-19, 2011, cruise from Barcelona that had stops in Villefranche, ports near Pisa and Rome, Naples, Kotor, Venice and Dubrovnik. Rare TLCOhio Posted December 18, 2018 Author #30 Share Posted December 18, 2018 Have been looking at some early February 2019 cruise options that would include a key stop in Grenada. BUT, then there are budgets to consider??!! We just completed our Jerusalem/Holy Lands, Egypt/Valley of the Kings,Petra/Jordan, Oman, Dubai/Abu Dhabi, etc., exploring. And, in late July 2019, we will be doing a combination of a western Canada Rocky Mountaineer rail-Vancouver-Alaska trip. Not cheap, but all of these great locations will be firsts for us to be visiting. These scenic western and NW regions have long been on our priority, to-do wish lists. To see our most recent trip live/blog for this history and religious “adventure”, check out these postings linked below. We started in Athens, Greece on Nov. 14, then traveled various locations connected with three of the world's major religions. Many fun and interesting visuals on this live/blog!! Below are just a few, quick visual samples. Check it out and let me know any questions or comments. Just over 6000 views so far on this live/blog. From Jerusalem's Church of the Holy Sepulcher, the site of Jesus' crucifixion, burial and resurrection. here is one interior view. Second is a procession along the historic Via Dolorosa. Third is my connecting at the Western/Wailing Wall in the most holy site for the Jewish faith.: In Luxor’s Valley of the Kings, we explored the tombs of Egypt rulers from 3300 years ago plus Karnak's night glories, statutes and columns.: In front of Petra’s Treasury in Jordan, we found this cute camel as a "co-star". Feeling the spirit of Indian Jones here!: We finished with the Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi and the sandy beaches of Dubai having its unique modern architecture in the background.:
Rare TLCOhio Posted October 6, 2019 Author #31 Share Posted October 6, 2019 From the Travel Section of the London/UK Telegraph in mid August, they had this headline: “The best boutique hotels in Grenada, from hilltop escapes to beachside villas” with these highlights: “There's a lot to like about the southern Caribbean island of Grenada. It's very easy-going, isn't particularly developed and has fantastic beaches, a mountainous and rainforested interior, and St George's; one of the region's prettiest capitals. On the accommodation front, Grenada has very few large chain hotels – instead it excels in privately owned, small-scale places to stay, ranging from a five-star colonial-style retreat to a boho-chic hideaway, a lively bayside hangout to an intimate collection of hilltop villas with facilities you'd expect in a luxury hotel.” Interesting options, details and pictures related to this island nation that we enjoyed in 2015!! Rare TLCOhio Posted July 22, 2023 Author #32 Share Posted July 22, 2023 From the London/UK Express last month, they had this headline: “Gorgeous Grenada - everything you need to know about the family friendly Caribbean island" with this sub-headline: "From paradise beaches and tranquil waterfalls, to flavourful food and an underwater sculpture park, stunning Grenada has it all. Here's why it's time to add the Spice Isle to your bucket list." Here is one of their reporting highlights by Hannah Britt: “The Belmont Estate is a plantation that dates back to the 17th century, around an hour’s drive north of the capital, St Georges, that welcomes guests into the world of tree-to-bar chocolate making. It’s a brilliant place to spend the day, inspecting cocoa pods, crushing them underfoot, peeking into the on-site factory, and sampling its wares. Locally made food, served buffet style, is served at its restaurant, too, and is delicious.” A wide variety of options, visuals, etc., are featured in this profile that brings back nice memories from this charming island. Rare TLCOhio Posted December 11, 2023 Author #33 Share Posted December 11, 2023 (edited) From Condé Nast Traveler magazine last month, they had this headline: “24 Best Places to Go in 2024” with these highlights for Grenada by writer Madison Flager: “While it may have traditionally been overlooked in favor of, say, St. Barts or Turks and Caicos, Grenada has more than proven itself a worthy contender. August is a popular time to visit: Spicemas, Grenada’s Carnival and the island’s largest cultural event, shimmies in during this time and brings with it weeks of parades, food, dancing, and performances. Things are only going to get busier in 2024.” Full story at: https://www.cntraveler.com/story/best-places-to-go-in-2024#intcid=_conde-nast-traveler-verso-hp-trending_80991bd1-1d14-4b9f-965a-7f9ff1e971d6_popular4-1 THANKS! Rare TLCOhio Posted January 27 Author #34 Share Posted January 27 From the New York Times Travel Section this weekend, they had this headline: “36 Hours Grenada” with these highlights: “Celebration is in the air on Grenada, the lush Caribbean island nation between Trinidad, St. Vincent and Barbados, which in February marks its 50th year of independence after centuries of French and British rule. The small country, a paradise of volcanic hills and idyllic bays, is often overlooked by vacationers despite being home to Grand Anse, a perennial candidate for the best beach in the Caribbean. There’s more than just lying on the shore on Grenada, a 52 Places to Go pick for 2024. Scuba dive through a recently expanded underwater art gallery, and on land, explore St. George’s, a photogenic capital with a popular spice market. Grenadians are famously friendly, especially when you join them for “liming,” the unofficial, delightfully indescribable national pastime of chilling out and enjoying everything island life has to offer." A nice variety of options and ideas for attractions and outdoor activities, restaurants and bars, shopping, where to stay and getting around are offered in this detailed profile. Here is another sample from their reporting: "Even if you’ve never had any interest in boating, it’s easy to understand why Grenada is one of the Caribbean’s most popular sailing destinations: It has a tropical climate, cooling tradewinds and is rarely hit by hurricanes. It also has endless anchorage points and secluded beaches best reached from the water." Full story at: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2024/01/25/travel/things-to-do-grenada.html THANKS! Enjoy! Rare TLCOhio Posted July 4 Author #35 Share Posted July 4 Sadly, the impacts seem worse than I had expected. From USA Today and MSN News this morning, they had this headline: “Some Caribbean islands see almost 'total destruction' after Hurricane Beryl” with these highlights: “A more complete picture emerged Wednesday of the extensive damage wrought by Hurricane Beryl's trek across the Windward Islands, revealing destruction and at least seven deaths. At least three islands report more than 90% of the homes and buildings either destroyed or severely damaged, the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency reported Wednesday. All three are within the chain of Grenadine Islands, where Beryl roared into the Caribbean on the southern end of the Windwards, between St. Vincent and Grenada." Grenada Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell described "total destruction" on the islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinique. "There's really nothing that can prepare you to see this level of destruction," Mitchell said. "It is almost Armageddon-like, almost total damage and destruction of all buildings. Complete devastation and destruction of agriculture. Complete and total destruction of the natural environment." As this link details, we have previously visited Grenada and loved it very much. We hope the best for recovery and rebuilding. blue_water Posted July 5 #36 Share Posted July 5 (edited) Is this still the Grenada forum? Should the other trip reviews be in a forum dedicated to that? Looks like lots of info on Grenada for armchair readers, but we like to see the places for the first time so we skipped over that portion… Edited July 5 by blue_water
