cherylandtk Posted October 24, 2015 #1 Share Posted October 24, 2015 Frequently we see recommendations on this board to purchase Primary medical trip insurance, especially for ease of filing claims. So I was very surprised to learn that there are times when purchasing Secondary insurance is actually preferable to having primary insurance! When the following situations apply, you might be better served by using Secondary insurance: 1. Your normal medical insurance (not trip) covers out of country medical expenses. 2. You have copays and deductibles with your standard medical. 3. Your trip medical coverage turns out to be less than your total medical expenses. Now, if you routinely purchase $500,000 or $ 1 million medical trip policies, then this likely won't ever apply to you. BUT, for example, if you have a good medical plan at work, and your chosen trip insurance is $50,000 or $15,000 medical because you have good work coverage, then this is something you do need to be aware of.
