monolith77 Posted December 23, 2015 #1 Share Posted December 23, 2015 We are travelling on Mariner at the start of Jan and was wondering what type of power adaptors we will need? Being from Australia, we will need to use 220-240v on the ship so do I need the US style Plug or some other type? (UK 3 pin or Europe 2 pin?) List of different ones here http://www.worldstandards.eu/electricity/plugs-and-sockets/ Most of the travel adaptors for sale all have a surge protector built in, 2-4 USB's and have 2 outlets, will these be an issue when boarding the ship? cheers. Surge protectors are not required onboard, nor are they safe to use. Most lines are banning surge protectors, and this causes some confusion with what to bring, as adapters and power strips can be obtained with or without surge protectors. It takes a little more effort, but even USB chargers can be found without surge suppressors. Here is a USCG Safety Notice regarding surge suppressors, and is the main driving force behind the ban: http://www.uscg.mil/tvncoe/Documents/safetyalerts/SurgeProtectiveDevices.pdf And here is a thread about surge suppressors. Note post #10 where cavediving got information from the source, and the information that even a surge suppressor that works fine ashore can fail catastrophically when used at sea under normal circumstances: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=2271143 Your electronics and such, via a USB charger can use the 110v US plug with an adapter (US 3-pin, type B). I wouldn't use the 110v for much else, even "dual voltage (100-240vac) appliances, as they don't perform well. You will need the type E European adapter for the 220v plug. monolith77 Posted December 23, 2015 Author #5 Share Posted December 23, 2015 (edited) Thank you for your quick replies. I knew that surge protectors are banned but didn't know the reasoning behind it....Thanks for that info chengkp75. So if I buy a basic adaptor like this one http://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/jackson-outbound-europe-travel-adaptor-jaeutravad will I be able to bring on-board a double adaptor or similar to plug into it to charge things at once? monolith77 Posted December 24, 2015 Author #7 Share Posted December 24, 2015 Thanks Chengkp75. That one looks good but I doubt it will arrive before we leave at the end of the week, perhaps I shouldn't leave things to the last minute...:o
