Is this a cabin upgrade or not?

We are due to sail on Oriana soon & when we initially booked it we were given our cabin near the front of deck A. At some point, we dont know when, this has changed & we are now near the front of deck D. The cabin on deck A seemed in a good location so if they have upgraded us, does anyone know what is better about the new cabin or its location?

Cabin Upgrades are simple to understand. There's a first letter which shows type of cabin e.g. inside, obstructed view, outside, balcony and so on and a second letter A,B,C,D etc. with A being the highest grade within that type. If you start with an E as the second letter for your grade and get reallocated another cabin of the same type with C second letter you have gone up a couple of grades. This is an upgrade. The cabin will likely be identical to that originally booked and likely be in a more popular location as most cruisers would have preferred. Unfortunately your own specific preference might be total opposite to the majority. It is an upgrade in the sense that if you had originally chosen the new allocation you would have paid more than you did.

Being a low deck it will be less wobbly during heavy sea conditions and it is on a level much nearer to the general infrastructure of the ship being just one deck higher than the Promenade Deck. Muster Drill and disembarking will be easier too.

Without knowing the cabin numbers , It is difficult to say! Your best way to find out for certain is to look at the deck plan - it may just be by one grade and therefore may be slightly closer to midships - in which case it is an "upgrade". Did you tick the "allow upgrade " box, and did you actually chose your cabin number on a select fare?

Hi john, thanks for the reply. I have checked the letters and they are the same so the rooms must be about the same. Hopefully being in the new location will be smoother than being near the top, so i will take it as an upgrade.

Hello there....we have just returned from our cruise on Oriana and our cabin was forward on Deck D....the only problem we had was noise from the theatre until 11.15 ish and also during the afternoon if they were rehearsing....so if it is likely to bother you take some earplugs!!. We were in D140 and it was particularly creaky when the ship moved about but it was well placed for reaching most areas of the ship. :)

Hi Jennywren thank you for your reply, your cabin was really close to the 1 we have been allocated. I dont think the theatre will bother us and as for the cabin creaking ive yet to stay in 1 that doesnt, infact i didnt sleep much the first time i cruised for that reason but im used to it now!

Hi Lostboys - hope you enjoy your cruise on Oriana - would be pleased to hear what you think of her as we are on her in May. I have seen some very differring reviews but then i have seen that of other ships too....and always enjoyed my cruises!

From my cruise last year, I thought she was a bit old and tired, and could do with some serious maintenance.

Public toilets constantly out of service (different ones everyday), a dryer running for the whole two weeks in reception trying to keep on top of the leaking water feature.

Cabin next to ours also suffered a water leak and needed to be dried out.

Bathrooms in cabins look shabby, and are worn out (dirty marks in toilets that cannot be removed, etc).

Overall, a ship past its sell by date.

I will let you know how it goes. To be honest, after reading a lot of negative reviews recently im not expecting much! We were on Aurora in May which im kind of expecting to be similar. We booked this cruise for the destination rather than the ship so aslong as it gets us there & back & we dont get any nasty stomach bugs i'll be quite happy!

Thanks. I am a glass half full person, and feel a bit the same way! The very first cruise I went on back in 2001 was on an oldish ship, (13 years old ) but looked like a ship should, rather than a block of flats. It had some rust, some leaks, lots and lots of wood and creaked like billyoh.....but we loved it!

We contacted P&O to find out about this change of cabin and they've told us its not an upgrade, the cabins are identical and its actually our travel agent who changed the cabin. Is it normal policy for them to do this rather than the cruise line?

Not that i am aware of......and if i were in your shoes I would be on to my TA straight away and ask them what they are playing at! Ask them why they have changed it without consulting you.

Sounds like someone else wanted your cabin and they have been naughty. Looking at the deck plan , I think you might be better off with the original.

But its up to you of course!

Thats exactly what we thought so we have contacted the TA to find out whats going on. To be honest weve had nothing but problems with this TA over 1 thing or another so next time we will book direct. Will let you know the excuse, erm i mean, reason!

Hope you get it sorted.

There are some really good Cruise TAs but they are usually cruise specialist companies, rather than high street general travel agents.

We use one of the good ones :):) get a better deal than we can from P &O direct, and their customer service is excellent.
