I would cruise on a different cruise line if I ever suspected that I needed to tip $100 to insure that I could get service that exceeded my expectations. Certainly not required for those kind of results on any of my cruises.

Completely agree. Maybe the over-tippers should try not tipping so much and see what type of service they get. I don't think it affects service as much as they assume.

 

I confess to being jaded in this regard: the first time I went to an all-inclusive, I followed someone's advice to generously tip the butler when I first met him. How could I know that he would be pretty terrible all week? Yet he got to keep that tip without doing anything to enhance the trip. Lesson learned. I waited tables in high school and college and I've had my share of customer service jobs over the years, too. I am actually a generous tipper when the situation warrants because I have been in their shoes and understand what a thankless job it can be. To automatically give someone tips in the hope that they'll be awesome is setting yourself up for heartache!
