Cell phones on board? - Alaska

They will work while in ports that have cells or in areas with cells. They would also need to be compatible with the system up there, a quick check with the chambers of commerce in the ports your trip takes you to will help you get an idea of which carriers are there. Or you could check your carrier to see if they are represented. I seem to remember some pretty small regional carriers but that may be different at that business changes so quickly.

If you are, or if communication is really important to you, try a satellite phone! These things are just the greatest and you don't have to buy one, you can rent it. Forget those calling cards and which ones work where. Forget aquiring a signal and if you do will you pay a fortune to use it. These things work pretty much anywhere, anytime.

True Chris, we had one last Alaska cruise, it was about $1 a minute but so would a roaming long distance cell that worked rarely.

It was a big beastie though. And you had to go out side to use it... bit chilly late at night.

Will cell phones work aboard ship in Alaska?

I have a Sprint PCS phone and it worked in certain places in Anchorage and Fairbanks on the PCS network and it didn't cost me any extra. I had my phone set to just work on the PCS network so I wouldn't have any roaming.

When you're at sea, you'll be out of range, and as previously posted, it will work in certain areas on shore, but there are a lot of dead pockets – which is a good thing. A place as pristine as Alaska shouldn’t be cluttered with cell phones ringing.

There is Internet access from the ship and you can also call via satellite from your stateroom – the charge is usually $5 per minute. Or, on shore, there are a number of internet cafes within walking distance of the piers

I used a cell with Verizon service while cruising to Alaska. I was about 2 hours out from Juneau and called the helicopter company regarding our late arrival to port.. Worked fine. No extra charge either.

Has anyone had experience sending e-mail and text messages from their mobile phone while at sea? (Our service provider is AT&T) I'm going to try it out on our San Francisco to Vancouver cruise. (I'm leaving hubby at home with 3 teenagers so I promised to be reachable!) On weekends I drive my eldest daughter all over California to play in volleyball tournements and she has been able to text message her friends from places where we can't get phone service.
