Communication Onboard

My wife, son, and I have not cruised for a few years, but we will be onboard the Oasis later this year. I am wondering how people keep in touch nowadays with each other while on the ship. My adult son uses a wheelchair and, although he is pretty independent, he will need to be able to reach my wife or me, just in case. Are we still talking walkie-talkies or is there a newer technology? Thanks.

I'm not sure about the Oasis, but walkies really don't work well on the ships.

On Carnival, we purchase the "social media" internet plan and them DH and I can iMessage or Facebook message each other on our phones (in airplane mode so we aren't using our cell).
