Is it more expensive to book excursions on the ship than online before hand ?

Not only is it more expensive for a ship's tour, but the group is likely to be a lot larger than booking with a local operator.

Sorry, can't help there as we don't book ship excursion. Always book with local operators or DIY.

It is very easy to check ahead of time. The cruise lines' excursions have become closer to fair market price in recent years. On a recent cruise the 5% difference was a small price to pay to assure we would arrive back in time.

 

I like to look at shoretrips or others to find different experiences than offered by the line. I am a big fan of the free/tip based walking tours.

I haven't noticed any significant price difference when I do price comparison. I prefer book cruise line excursions prior to going on our cruises. If you wait until you are aboard, the excursion you want may be completely booked up.
